Carrickfergus Castle was built in 1177 on the north shore of Belfast Lough and is best known for its eventful history. Carrickfergus Castle was besieged several times, first by the Scots, then by Irish clans, then by the English and finally by the French, leading to it being rebuilt up to 3 times.

Used as a residence until 1928, it remains one of the best-preserved castles in Northern Ireland.

Surrounded by a natural moat formed by the Belfast Logh, the castle offers magnificent views of the surrounding area from the top of its main tower, a square, crenellated, 4-storey tower.

Allow about €8 per person for the tour, and follow the guide! Here, you’ll visit the castle’s various large rooms, starting with the banqueting hall where the region’s great lords and nobles used to gather.

You’ll also find a small exhibition on the history of the castle, as well as the major historical events in the town of Carrickfergus. The tour is quite interesting, and the setting absolutely superb. What’s more, the châteaux guides are friendly and inexhaustible on the subject: don’t hesitate to challenge them!
