A narrative-documentary hybrid, Aardvark follows a blind man named Larry who begins practicing Jiu-Jitsu. He befriends his trainer, named Darren, and soon finds himself pulled into a murky, film noir world of murderous intrigue. The film played on the festival circuit in 2011, where our own Ard Vijn saw it. In his review, he commented: Writer-director Kitao Sakurai ... made a fly-on-the-wall documentary about his blind friend Larry Lewis. Larry is a very likable guy with a friendly charisma and a no-nonsense attitude, both about his handicap and his drinking problem. Seeing him enlist for martial arts training and earning his first colored belt may not be particularly deep or enlightening, but it sure is easy to watch and the camaraderie on display is addictive....

Samuel L. Jackson is following in the footsteps of Sarah Silverman in a hilarious anti-Mitt Romney video entitled "Wake The F**K Up." The clip was written by Adam Mansbach, the author of "Go the Fuck to Sleep," which itself became a viral sensation when both Jackson and Werner Herzog narrate versions. Boaz Yakin ("Fresh," "Remember The Titans") and Kitao Sakurai ("Aardvark") co-directed the new clip, and like the Silverman video, it was sponsored by the Jewish Council for Research and Education. "Sorry my friends but there's no time to snore," Jackson says in the Nsfw nursery rhyme in the clip. "An out-of-touch millionaire has just declared war. On schools, the environment, unions, fair pay. We're all on our own if Romney has his way..." Watch the entire clip below:...

Andrew Barchilon and Kitao Sakurai, the cofounders of the New York-based production company Naked Faces. got their start in the world of film. Sakurai shot and Barchilon produced Ry Russo-Young's "You Wont Miss Me," after which the pair went on to make 2010 festival favorite "Aardvark," a slow-burning noir about a blind jiu-jitsu student who gets pulled into the shady doings of his friend and instructor (Barchilon served as producer while Sakurai wrote and directed the film). Their latest project finds them not just venturing into television but breaking it down as well (sometimes literally). "The Eric Andre Show," currently airing on Adult Swim on Sundays at 12:30am, is technically a talk show with interviews and planned bits. But host Eric Andre and his sidekick Hannibal Buress oversee what's more a scene of surreal, apocalyptic strangeness taking place on some alternate reality public access channel in which Savion...

Director Yoshihiro Nakamura has gathered a strong following at Fantastic Fest over the last two years. The festival showed Fish Story in 2009 and in 2010, Golden Slumber was one of the most buzzed films coming out of the fest. This year was the highly anticipated A Boy and His Samurai (Chonmage Purin), and it is a remarkably low-key and small-scale film that retains his notable charm. Samurai focuses on Hiroko Yusa and her young son Tomoya in modern day Tokyo. Hiroko struggles to balance work and raising her child by herself when a 19th century samurai is transported into their world and changes everything. Kijima Yasube finds the 21st century difficult to adjust to as any person would, and over the course of 108 minutes we are treated to the expected hijinks—including Kijima struggling to learn how to play Pokemon—pulled off with absolute charm.
Initially, Kijima is shocked to find the independence of Hiroko,...

Update: Jessica Cole was awarded Best Actress in the Amd & Dell “Next Wave” Spotlight Competition at the Fantastic Fest 2011 Awards for his performance in Aardvark.
Larry Lewis, Jr. is blind, and he’s also an alcoholic. These are the first two things the actor (portraying himself) reveals to the audience, speaking before a AA group meeting in Aardvark. This also marks the last time Larry’s alcoholism plays into the story, which was initially an issue for me, but given time to digest this bizarre and uncomfortably poignant story, it seems more clear that the events that unfold stem directly from Larry’s struggle to maintain control.
Written and directed by Kitao Sakurai, Aardvark is a film allegedly based in part on real events from Larry’s life. A man seemingly at constant peace with himself and the world, always calm and smiling, Larry also has an adventurous side. When...

Two guys who use their heads for very different things are the stars of Headhunters and Aardvark, another pair of films playing at Fantastic Fest 2011. Headhunters is about a job recruiter who also steals art on the side. He is forced to use all his wit and skill to compete against his latest mark, played by the man best known as Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. As for Aardvark, Larry Lewis Jr. is a real-life blind man who plays himself in a movie that combines his aptitude for jiujitsu, inability to see and a murder mystery. Read about each after the jump. If you're a fan of twisty, turn-y heist movies that make you laugh, cringe, sit on the edge of your seat and drop your jaw to the floor, then you are going to love the Norwegian film Headhunters directed by Morten Tyldum. It centers on Roger Brown,...

Well, after five days of rigorous screenings, and countless sleepless nights, the festival’s 70+ films and shorts have been narrowed down to but a select few which have been chosen as winners for this year’s Fantastic Fest Awards!
Winning a Fantastic Fest award not only means your work has a better shot of surviving past the festival, but it also means that you as a filmmaker, are to be faced with a somewhat serious decision. Just because you’ve won an award, doesn’t necessarily mean you get to keep it. A time honored festival tradition dictates that possession of the award is ultimately dependent on your ability to chug a beer from said award, and for big winners like Simon Barrett who penned story for the film You’re Next (winner of 4 awards), this means quite a few pints! So be sure to keep an eye out for...

Hollywoodnews.com: “You’re Next,” Adam Wingard’s horror thriller about a family terrorized my masked intruders, on the Best Picture award at this year’s Fantastic Fest, which hosted thousands of genre-film fans in Austin, Texas.
The year’s fest opened with a screening of Tom Six’s “Human Centipede” sequel, and featured a regional premiere of Morgan Spurlock’s Comic-Con documentary, “A Fan’s Hope.”
Both “Next” and “Hope” played the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month before stopping in Austin. “Next” practically swept the Horror category at the festival, grabbing Director for Wingard, Best Screenplay for Simon Barrett, and Best Actress for Sharni Vinson. Sean Harris, meanwhile, earned Best Actor for “A Lonely Place To Die.”

Acquired by Lionsgate and pulled from all but one of its screenings at the festival, the crowd-pleasing horror-comedy "You're Next" still killed at the Fantastic Fest 2011 Awards. The story of a couple trapped in a remote house by crazed animal-mask-wearing killers won four awards: Best Horror Feature, Best Director (Adam Wingard), Best Screenplay (Simon Barrett), and Best Actress (Sharni Vinson). Unofficially, it also won my award for Best Defacement of the Alamo Drafthouse. Look for this one from Lionsgate, probably sometime late in 2012.
The other big winner of the night was "Bullhead," which made a huge splash in the Amd & Dell Next Wave Spotlight Competition devoted to emerging filmmakers. The dark character study of a steroid-taking Mafia enforcer won Best Picture, Best Director (Michael R. Roskam), and Best Actor (Matthias Schoenaerts). According to IMDb, the film does not yet have a Us distributor.
Choosing the winners in any of the categories couldn't be easy.

Aardvark concerns Larry, a recovering alcoholic who is also blind (played by Larry Lewis Jr. who is blind in real life). Wandering by a Jiu Jitsu studio one day and intrigued by the sounds he hears inside, Larry strikes up a conversation with Darren, the young man who teaches there. Next we see Larry learning and rapidly advancing through the program as he and Darren become fast friends and begin haunting a local strip club together where he makes the acquaintance of, and becomes a client of, exotic dancer Candy. They make an interesting if seedy trio especially when the viewer becomes aware that Darren is in trouble with people who keep calling him, and who are unhappy with various jobs he has been sent...

The best part about Fantastic Fest is that it offers a unique opportunity for discovery. I mean where else am I going to see a movie about a blind, formerly alcoholic Mma enthusiast or a film exploring the seedy underbelly of the Belgian beef industry? But with over 100 feature and short films there’s a lot to consider. Many are films which I know little to nothing about and others already have a lot of buzz surrounding them. But who needs anyone to tell them to go out and see Melancholia? Heck The Loved Ones has been out for almost two years. That’s not to say those aren’t great flicks, they are, but the search for that hidden gem is what keeps me coming back every year. So after scouring the program here is a list of ten of my most anticipated films of Fantastic Fest 2011.

We're at T-minus two days to the magic, mystery, and movies of Fantastic Fest, the film's world's premiere celebration of weird, wild, and wonderful cinema. It's also a really good place for alliteration, apparently.
With the opening night world premiere of "The Human Centipede 2: Full Sequence" bearing down on us, it's time to game plan. It's not an easy task. There are so many good movies at Fantastic Fest and they're all playing opposite one another. What to pick?
To make things a little easier on you (or maybe harder on you if you'd already penciled in something else), here are my selections for the five most intriguing looking movies on this year's schedule. I didn't pick anything I've already seen (like Jeff Nichols' "Take Shelter" -- which is absolutely outstanding, by the way), and I didn't pick anything with big-name directors or talent. I did that for two reasons.

To put it simply, this film fulfills two of my favorite cinematic cravings… a strange story, and a basis in real life events. I love it when the phrase “truth is stranger than fiction” can be put into practical use, and this is one of those examples. It also doesn’t hurt that the story involves an element of mixed martial arts. Aardvark is the feature film debut of director Kitao Sakurai. The story is based on the life of Larry Lewis, Jr. who also stars as himself in the film.
Synopsis: Larry Lewis Jr. lives in the small town of Cleveland Heights, Ohio. He is blind. He is also a recovering alcoholic. Larry doesn’t let his physical limitations interfere with his enjoyment of life. He holds down a regular job, gets around on his own, and likes to get involved in all kinds of adventures. 29 more days to go until Fantastic Fest 2011 takes over Austin Texas! I cannot wait. 17 more films were announced late last week. Only one of those 17 films was on our “Film Guestimation” list for Fantastic Fest 2011. They still have yet to announce Opening & Closing films along with other Gala screenings so hopefully we won’t look like total fools. All we need is maybe half of our films that we listed to show up. Anyway, beyond the break, you can check out what is playing.
Apparently, more films will be announced this week. We will try to get those out as soon as we hear about it.
Events & Contests
100 Best Kills
One of the greatest long-running traditions of Fantastic Fest is the 100 Best Kills Party, where we sit in a theater together and turn the spotlight on the Grim Reaper of movieland as he disembowels, detonates and decapitates again and again and again.

In addition to the line-up of 17 new films making their world, North American or Us premieres, Fantastic Fest has some great contests and one hottie of a new director in Kristen Bell.

If you're a fan of genre film, you've had September 22-29 circled on your calendar for months. That's when one of the most fun, depraved and intimate film festivals in the country once again invades Austin, Texas. Official Us Poster For Lars von Trier’s ‘Melancholia’; VOD Debut In October After Fantastic Fest Bow
VOD must be quite a profitable avenue for Magnet, as they will debut Lars von Trier‘s highly-anticipated Cannes hit Melancholia on the digital platform over a month before its theatrical release in November. Vulture has the official Us poster premiere (using the same key art as the rest) as well as the news of an October 7th, 2011 VOD release date for the drama starring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgard, Stellan Skarsgard and Udo Kier.
It will then debut in theaters on November 11th, but it has also just been announced as part of the Fantastic Fest line-up. Check out their second wave of titles after the poster for the fest that runs from September 22nd to the 29th.

Fantastic Fest is an annual film festival in Austin, Texas, founded in 2005 by Tim League of Alamo Drafthouse, Harry Knowles of Ain’t It Cool News, Paul Alvarado-Dykstra, and Tim McCanlies, writer of The Iron Giant and Secondhand Lions. The festival which focuses on genre films such as horror, science fiction, fantasy, action, Asian, and cult takes place in September at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar, filling three screens for eight days and hosting many writers, directors and actors, both well established and unknown. We’ve already posted the first wave of films which was pretty impressive. Now the fest has announced the second wave which includes Ahn Sang-hoon’s Blind, Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia and aume Balaguero’s Sleep Tight. See the press release below.

Kudos to the AFI Fest for setting up an important sidebar that will expose the best that the next generation of filmmakers have to offer. Bumping up their crop of exciting new auteur cinema, sections labeled "Young Americans" and "New Auteurs" (Cannes heavy) are showcases you'll want to keep an eye on - I can vouch on a good chunk of titles already selected. Among the half dozen included names in "Young Americans" section we find a pair of filmmakers in Alistair Banks Griffin and David Robert Mitchell who were included in our own American New Wave 25 feature this summer. Two Gates Of Sleep, one of my top discoveries of the year from this year's Cannes will finally receive its North American premiere. Filling out the section, we also have the North American premiere for the Locarno preemed Kitao Sakurai's Aardvark (Sakurai was the cinematographer on You Wont Miss...
