Funny little sketch about how the mind works
Owning two cats as I do, I have had to get used to working with plenty of dead or partially dead animals which they have hunted down and killed. As a result of this I am very conscious of the way my mind works in regards doing something myself that is normally done far away from me but for my benefit – killing and handling dead animals. Even dealing with dead ones it is hard not to let the mind make it out to be weird or wrong in some way – the outcome being hesitancy and a bit of wimpiness. Although I read that this short was about euthanasia and gender roles, I do think that the thrust of it is about what goes on in the head when confronted with this.
The rabbit is already dying and it is a matter of putting it out of its misery but the main character's mind cannot get the images out of his head; this includes some gory visions of its death and also the guilt in the aftermath of the deed. It is silly of course to feel this way simply because the act has been made personal by your direct involvement and it is this silliness that the film plays well on. The flashes are clever and structured well, with the best one being a reveal of a beach-full of bunnies; likewise the role of the man/woman is well played out as that is sadly how it often does work! Overall Myxomatosis is a clever little sketch that delivers in a funny but also quite clever manner – could have done with a much stronger ending but still good despite this.
