Pohela Boishakh 2021: Pohela is the first day of the first month (Boishakh) of Bengali calendar. Hence, Pohela Boishakh is also known as Bengali New Year. Bengalis all over the world celebrate New Year by on this day by greeting greet each other saying, Shubho Noboborsho where Naba means New and Barsho mean Year, together with means New Year.

However, the first day of the initial month of Baishakh of the Bengali solar calendar is called by many names like Naba Barsha, Pohela Boishakh, and Pahela Baisakh in various parts of India.

People wear new clothes- Women were white sarees with bright red borders and adorn themselves with large gold earrings and heavy jewellery. Whereas men dress in traditional kurtas and dhotis and which are mostly white in colour.

They even indulge themselves in decorating houses with alpana in front of the home and also prepare a number of delicacies to celebrate the day- feasting on everything from fish, seafood and mutton to seasonal vegetables cooked etc.

“Poila Boishak is an auspicious day which marks the beginning of a new year for the Bengalis. To celebrate this day Bengalis like to indulge in good and delicious food. Lunch and dinner on Poila Boishahkh mostly consist of the much loved non-vegetarian delicacies."

Fish is the most preferred and integral part of any Bengali on a Poila Baishak meal.

"Maacher Paturi with steamed rice, that's an all-time favourite item for the Bengalis. People also like to have other seafood dishes like Tandoori Baby Bhetki, Gondhoraj Malai Fish Tikka, Tandoori Baby Bhetki, Shorshe Ilish, etc. Apart from that, the Kosha Mangsho and Pulao is also a much-loved combination that people prefer. Even Bengali household cooks similar things to these and overall it becomes a grand feast for one and all."

On this day, people pray to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi so that their life and households are filled with God's blessings. The day marks the beginning of the new financial year for the Bengali business community.

It is believed that the beginning of the month is a day that should be welcomed properly and then the whole year will be fine.

Bengali New Year is celebrated in West Bengal and among Bengali communities in Assam, Tripura and Bangladesh. In Assam, Pohela Boishakh is celebrated as Bihu and also known as Assamese New Year.
