Baudoinia compniacensis

Baudoinia compniacensis

Observation - Baudoinia compniacensis - UK and Ireland. Description: Whilst this black, granular fungus is usually associated with external walls of Whisky distilleries

Whilst this black, granular fungus is usually associated with external walls of Whisky distilleries (picture 1) it seems most 'at home' on nearby trees. They have a sinister appearance and make photos look underexposed. Close inspection reveals that new growth is less affected and annual leaves are largely unaffected. It is most prevelant near to the warehouses but anywhere down-draught, where the ethanol-rich atmosphere pervades, is fair game. It becomes a domestic problem for a few house owners inside the somewhat aromatic zone.
