[House Plant]: Parachute Plant – Unique and Unusual Indoor Plants for Your Home Decor

There’s something so peaceful and relaxing about having plants inside your home. I love the look of plants tucked into the corners of a room, displayed on coffee tables and kitchen counters, and gracing bathroom vanities.

Plants help a room feel grounded.

I especially love unique plants. Plants that act as conversation starters, and not something you see everywhere you go.

I’m always on the look-out for unique plants, and with this new series on my blog, I’ll share my latest finds with you.

Parachute Plant (Ceropegia Sandersonii)

This is the most amazing and beautiful plant!

About the Plant

The Ceropegia Sandersonii, also known as the Parachute Plant, Fountain Flower, or Umbrella Plant, is native to Mozambique, South Africa and Swaziland.

This plant can be grown outdoors in warm climates, or indoors year-round.

This evergreen plant is a climbing vine with very sparse succulent-like leaves. The large flowers have a distinct parachute shape and are a pale greenish-white color.

Parachute Plants typically need good drainage and bright, indirect light when grown indoors.

This plant actually attracts flies, as the pollinator, and is somewhat of a carnivorous plant. The plant gives off the scent of an injured honey bee, attracting the flies, which then fall into the flower, get covered in pollen and can’t escape until the flower dies. When the flies escape, they fly to the next flower to pollinate it. Pretty cool, eh?

The Parachute Plant is non-toxic, so it’s safe to grow in homes with children and pets.

This plant is an easy-to-care-for plant, so even if you don’t have a ‘green thumb’, you should be able to grow this plant.

Why I Love It

I love that this plant has very few leaves, making the twining vines and flowers the focal point. I also really love the color of the flowers – white with a bit of pale green. So pretty!

While this is a climbing plant, it also looks great in a hanging basket with the vines trailing down – so versatile!

This plant is not one you see very often, making it a conversation piece in your home.

I grow plants for many reasons: to please my eye or to please my soul, to challenge the elements or to challenge my patience, for novelty or for nostalgia, but mostly for the joy in seeing them grow. ~David Hobson
