Description

Carex pensylvanica, or Pennsylvania Sedge, is a perennial sedge that is one of the first to bloom in spring. The sedge is a shade-loving perennial growing in dry to medium soils. Pennsylvania Sedge enjoys upland woodlands, wooded slopes, or sandy openings in wooded areas. It makes great groundcover in dry shade or as an underplanting for shade perennials. Pennsylvania Sedge is also a great lawn substitute for dry soils in shady areas. It forms a tuft that either never needs mowing or mow only 2-3 times per year to 2 inches tall.

Carex pensylvanica is also commonly known as Oak Sedge as it’s often found in dry woods areas with oak trees.
