I heard of something similar in Tanzania, where the tree company would plant corn/maize between the rows of newly planted young trees. The community was allowed to harvest and keep all the corn that was produced. In return they kept their livestock out of the "young" plantations and give the trees a head start to grow

This system worked very well in the Clifton plantations close to Lothair, enabling the management team to eradicate all invasive weeds from the area. Since the systems removal it became a uphill battle against noxious weeds and fuel loads

This plot was donated with a borehole, electricity and fence in Ephraim Mogale Local Municipality - Limpopo Province. It's now debushed and today young up-coming farmers were trained on how to grow seedlings for themselves. # Youth in Agriculture # Practical Agriculture Training.

Today site visit at Makgoba SAPEKOE Tea Estate in Magoebaskloof (Limpopo Province) was a step in the right direction. This estate is rich in medicinal and indigenous plants and plenty of tea. Thanks Dr Kweteps for your nice products and presentation. Socio economic assessment on +500 beneficiaries staying on the estate to follow.

The informal Bambara Groundnuts and Groundnuts market survey continues nicely this week (22 - 26 April 2024) at MTO White River plantation (Mpumalanga Province) and the surroundings. Not much price difference as compared to Limpopo Province agroforestry sites: Bambara Groundnuts: 2L Bucket@ R50, 5L Bucket @ R100, 10L Bucket @ R200, 20L Bucket @ R400, small plastics (Groundnuts) @ R10 - R20. # Agroforestry a new dawn for community food security & income generation.

The groundnut informal market survey day 2 continues nicely... This youth made it clear that he liked the marketing activity of agroforestry instead of soil preparations, weeding and harvesting activities. He can make +R4000 per 80kg bag by selling small plastics of groundnuts @ R10 - R20 each. Interesting groundnuts prices per buckets: 20L @ R300; 9L @ R120; 2L @ R50 and 1L @ R30. # Agroforestry a new dawn for community food security & income generation.
