Spider lily - Fill your garden with fragrant flowers throughout the year - Hymenocallis littoralis Spider lily plants are one of the easiest, fuss-free plants you can grow in your garden in pots, or on the ground. They grow to a height of 50-60 cm with long, flat, strap-like, dark green leaves. Spider lilies have the most unique-looking flowers; a thin membrane cup in the middle surrounded by long white petals, also with long filaments and anther. Spider lily plants bloom almost throughout the year with tall stalks having large bunches of beautiful white flowers standing tall, high above the broad, strappy leaves. Leaves are dark green, about 60-80 cm long and 10-15 cm wide with a prominent mid-vein. Young leaves stay upright, whereas older leaves bend and fall over the edges of pots making these plants look very beautiful indeed. Blooming needs good direct sunlight, though the plant can look good even without the blooms. The inflorescence usually consists of 8-10 flowers on long stalks, and range in color from yellow, green, and white. The sunflower is not a flower! 🌻 Its petals are actually leaves... It happens that the leaves disguise themselves as yellow to attract pollinators. Now, look inside the flower more closely. Look into what you once thought was the flower and are actually leaves, and you will see the flowers. Many... Many... Beautiful and delicate in an alignment beyond harmonic (the geometry of nature). What you thought was a flower, is actually an outline that holds hundreds and hundreds of flowers... And if we look at it with the eyes of gardeners, we will realize that each little flower holds within itself, in this golden dust, countless fields of sunflowers. The "petals" of a sunflower that we typically see are not true petals but are actually ray florets, which resemble petals. These florets are part of the sunflower's composite flower head. The term "inflorescence" refers to the arrangement of multiple flowers on a plant, designed for more efficient pollination. Sunflowers have a unique inflorescence comprising a large head (capitulum) with numerous small flowers (florets) that mature into seeds. 🌻

𝗥𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗱 ( 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮 𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮) 🚀 📷 @thecapeflora ( ig ) “ Disa porrecta is a perennial epiphyte of between 200-600mm tall, usually observed at higher altitudes of up to 2000 m A.S.L. in damp grasslands from the EC – the FS. Disa or dis means 2, in possible reference to the style wings, or alternatively dis meaning rich[ly coloured] referring to the bright orange-red flowers of the genus. Porrectus means to lean forward or outwards. This little guy appears on first sighting to resemble one of the members of the Asphodelaceae (red-hot poker) family in the process of dying-back, but on closer inspection characteristics unique to the genus become obvious. The specimen seems to prefer areas with half day sun in close proximity to cliff-faces where the moisture content of the grassland is higher. The leaves of D. porrecta are long and slender (300X1mm) and on casual inspection resemble a blade of grass. The inflorescence is a dense corymb with the flowers facing down. Colour ranges from a vivid pink-red to orange-red with yellow petals and lip. The sepals converge to a thin tip of around 3mm in length. A large spur is present on each flower measuring 20-40mm long and is upwards pointing. Flowering occurs from Jan-March. Would make for an attractive garden ornamental in summer, but care must be taken to avoid full-day sunlight and planting should take placein moist, shallow soils.
