🦠Alternaria spp. are common saprophytic fungi that typically act as opportunistic pathogens of various plant species and are significant producers of mycotoxins. Their taxonomy has recently undergone extensive revision, including merging 13 previously independent genus within the group, such as Ulocladium, Sinomyces, or Embellisia. 🔬Morphologically, colonies of Alternaria exhibit dark, blackish-gray, and brownish tones, with textures ranging from cottony to powdery. The conidia, which are brown and ellipsoidal, consist of a variable number of cells, with transverse and vertical (muriform) as well as irregular septa. These conidia are released from the tips of conidiophores, forming characteristic chains. 💊 Over the past few decades, more than 300 secondary metabolites produced by Alternaria have been described. Some species produce mycotoxins like tenuazonic acid (TeA), a significant contaminant of sunflower seeds and many cereals. Other compounds are under investigation for their antibiotic, antifungal, or anticancer properties. 💡 Additionally, research is ongoing on the use of non-pathogenic strains as biocontrol agents against, for example, bacteria, nematodes, or insects. ❓Are you familiar with the genus of fungi called Cylindrocarpon? It was named so simply because its spores are cylindrical in shape. However, the taxonomy of this group has changed significantly in recent years, and it currently includes 7 genera: Campylocarpon, Cylindrodendrum, Dactylonectria, Ilyonectria, Neonectria, Rugonectria, and Thelonectria. 🦠 Many of the species in the so-called “Cylindrocarpon” group are pathogens of woody species. These fungi are commonly found in soils and can attack plants if the conditions are favorable. Propagation techniques by cuttings are very conducive to the development of these types of diseases. 🍇In grapevines, the disease it causes is known as black foot disease, due to the rot it causes at the stem base and roots. The fungi most frequently detected associated with this symptomatology is Dactylonectria torresenis. 🔬They generally form felty colonies, with orange-brown hues and zoning. As mentioned earlier, under the microscope, we can see those characteristic macroconidia, hyaline, cylindrical, with 3-5 septa, produced at the tip of phialides, or on sporodochia. Microconidia are not present in all species. Chlamydospores, resistance structures, are very noticeable, usually golden, globular, which can be solitary or form long chains or even clusters. 🙂 I hope you find this post interesting and share your concerns about this or other pathogens with us.

🌱 Did you know that fungi from the Botryosphaeriaceae family pose one of the major phytosanitary challenges for key woody crops such as grapevines, avocados, and almonds? 🍇🥑🌰 Their impact isn't limited to crops alone; it also affects forest species like oaks and chestnuts 🌳. 🔬 Among the 24 genera in this family, Neofusicoccum, Diplodia, and Botryosphaeria stand out as the most prevalent, with Neofusicoccum being an invader affecting over 46 hosts from 18 botanical families. 🧫🔍 These pathogens are characterized by dark pycnidia housing initially hyaline conidia, which can darken and septate over time. Additionally, they are often accompanied by microconidia, known as spermatia, with an apparent sexual function. 🍃🔬 Species from the Trichoderma genus have proven effective in the preventive control of these pathogens. Interestingly, these pathogens tend to live latently and asymptomatically in plants, becoming active as pathogens in stress situations such as drought. Can we prevent their behavior from changing? Can we intervene with Trichoderma species? We continue our research. Seguimos investigando #Agriculture #Horticulture #ScientificResearch

🌿Surely many of you have heard of, or have experienced in your crops, anthracnose, a very common disease that affects many types of crops, such as strawberries, vanilla, or avocado, among others. But do you know the fungus that causes it? Today we talk about the genus Colletotrichum, the main culprit of this disease. 🔬🦠 In PDA culture, Colletotrichum presents, depending on the species, varied morphologies and shades, ranging from grayish and dark colors to pinkish, orange, and whitish tones. Colletotrichum forms conidia inside cushion-shaped structures called acervuli, which are formed on plant tissue. From these, dark, hair-shaped setae are born, which can be seen with the naked eye. The conidia have variable shapes, generally cylindrical and elongated. The hyphae and conidia of Colletotrichum form characteristic appressoria, dark-colored structures that facilitate their attachment to plant tissue. 👩🔬👨🔬 We have said that Colletotrichum is a very important pathogen, but, as with the vast majority of fungi, not everything is going to be problems! Some species of Colletotrichum live as mutualistic endophytes of plants, without being pathogens, and several studies in tomatoes demonstrate that this interaction can be beneficial for plants, promoting their growth, solubilizing phosphates, or even protecting them from other pathogens such as Fusarium. #Colletotrichum #Fungi #Phytopathology #PlantHealth #FungiResearch #Proplantae

😊 Today we are not going to present any fungus, but a bacteria! 🍂 Recently we have received cabbage plants with marked symptoms: necrotic lesions that start from the margins of the leaves and progressively dry them out, causing them to fall, causing the plants to not develop well or die. 👩🔬And what pathogen causes this symptomatology? Our suspicions fall on a specific bacteria, so we sow the samples in a specific medium, NSA, where this bacteria shows a bright yellow tone that makes it easier for us to isolate it. As it is not easy to identify bacterial colonies with the naked eye or under a microscope, we confirmed their identity using PCR and sequencing. And indeed, the pathogen is Xanthomonas campestris. 🦠Xanthomonas campestris is a gram-negative bacteria that causes black rot or “V” spot in brassicas. It acts as a vascular pathogen and is transmitted through seeds, and is very difficult to control, and can wreak havoc on crops, especially if warm and humid climatic conditions favor it. ❗🏭 But, be careful! X. campestris is not only a pathogen, but is used industrially to produce xanthan gum, a polysaccharide that acts as an emulsifier and thickener. For example, it is used as an emulsifier for shampoos, antibiotic solutions, a thickener for phytosanitary formulations or an additive for gluten-free flours. #XanthomonasCampestris #Phytopathology #PlantHealth #Bacteria #Biotech #Xhantam #ProPlantae
