Have you ever thought about a cold-hardy perennial basil? I have... and apparently, others have. Is it possible? I don't know. But here are some ideas if anyone is crazy enough to chase down this rabbit hole. 1. Many Ocimum species are from Africa. That's a bad thing as Africa is quite hot. But you know what? There are also parts of South Africa that are in USDA hardiness zone 8. That's not Siberian cold but still. Plants from those regions should be able to take -12 °C without a problem and (with some protection) probably also colder temperatures. 2. The "normal" basil: Ocimum basilicum is an annual plant, as are most basil species. That's bad. But there are several perennial species, and even some commercial hybrids like 'African Blue' (Ocimum kilimandscharicum x basilicum 'Purpurascens') 3. There are several perennial species of Ocimum in South Africa that are growing in USDA hardiness zone 8! We are getting closer. 4. Are those species any good? Can they be used like normal basil or crossed with other species or hybrids? I have no idea. That's something to be found out. But there are some positive hints. a) For example Ocimum angustifolium is described as a "strongly aromatic, very hardy perennial". Sound's good! b) Those species are on the same continent as for example Ocimum kilimandscharicum, which has been used in previous crosses. 5. Many unknowns. For most species, I can't find a lot of information or even seeds. So if you find anything helpful or even seeds or cuttings of those plants: That would be great. P.S: I forgot to mention the potentially hardy species: - Ocimum angustifolium - Ocimum burchellianum - Ocimum coddii - others? There are several others, but I couldn't confirm them, as I found nearly no information about those species. One example is Ocimum waterbergense.

If you are looking for some more information on two of those species: - Ocimum angustifolium https://wildflowernursery.co.za/indigenous-plant-database/becium-angustifolium/ - Ocimum burchellianum https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/590688-Ocimum-burchellianum

It would be so good to be able to grow basil outside in Dunedin all year 😍
