Aipo (Lavandula rotundifolia)

Woody shrub, highly branched, up to 1 m. Leaves up to 7 cm long, green or, more rarely, glaucous, broadly ovate to ovate or triangular, margins unevenly dentate. Branched inflorescence, with blue, or occasionally white, flowers. This endemic of Cape Verde is typical of the more mountainous islands of Santo Antão, São Vicente, São Nicolau, Santiago and Fogo. Distributed from 400-1,500 m, sometimes lower, this species obeys a wide range of ecological requirements, as it occupies semi-arid and subhumid zones in equal measure. Many populations are only found on crags, probably because of grazing pressure, but this species is not considered under threat and has been classified as Least Concern.
