Gibalbera (Semele androgyna)

Perennial, climbing plant, cladodes (false leaves), alternate and glabrous, lanceolate to ovate. Flowers are greenish-yellow and small and emerge from the margins of the cladodes. Fruits are round, up to 1 cm in diameter, initially greenish but becoming reddish when ripe. Exclusive to Madeira and the Canaries and found throughout the central and western Canary Islands (another species S. gayae is endemic to Gran Canaria). Typical of evergreen forests, generally found between 400 and 1,200 m altitude, but grows at lower levels in Madeira, following the distribution of natural wooded areas. Common in many forest zones of the Canaries, although it requires a certain habitat quality and is often absent in degraded woodland. In Madeira, it rarely occurs naturally.
