Remarks :

A species which had undergone several taxonomic changes were some classification prefer the taxon Symphyotrichum subulatum var. squamatum . At present S. squamatum is used for this species until there is more stability about its name.


Description, Habitat and Distribution
Habitat in Europe: Near the sea, usually on saline soil
Preferred habitat in Malta: Valley beds, roadsides, disturbed wetlands, disturbed weedy places, also in urban areas and margins of irrigated fields
Botanical Description: Annual or biennial 30-100 cm. Stem erect or ascending, glabrous. Leaves mostly linear or linear-lanceolate, entire. Capitula in symmetrical panicles. Involucral bracts in 3 rows, oblong to oblanceolate, tapered near the purplish, serrulate apex to an acute or mucronate point, appressed, the longest 5-6 mm. Ligules violet-blue, about as long as the pappus, more numerous than the tubular florets.
Chromosome number: 2n=20
Distributional range: Widely naturalized in S.W. Europe recently also in C. & E. Mediterranean region, and still spreading
Native region outside Europe: (Central and South America; widely naturalized elsewhere.)
