This water chestnut is native to Asia and has been introduced to Eastern North America. It has been found in artificial ponds and lakes in Virginia and Maryland. Several sources report this as Trapa bispinosa var. iinumia Nakano or Trapa natans var. bispinosa (Roxb.) Makino.
The floating leaves of Trapa bispinosa are usually reddish on the underside. The fruits have a smaller apical horn giving the fruit an overall fusiform shape (something like a sharp football) as opposed to the tetrahedral fruits of Trapa natans.
There are 7 records in the project database.
