Mold Spotlight: Acremonium

Acremonium

Acremonium mold can grow on many different surfaces and comes in a variety of colors.

Acremonium is a genus of mold that consists of nearly 100 different species of mold. These molds are slow-growing, prolific mold that is often identified because of the unpleasant odor in the air. If ingested, this mold can be toxic. But what is this mold and how can you identify it in your home? Let’s take a look at this mold.

How to Identify Acremonium Mold?

Acremonium is a particularly hard mold to find because it lives inside drywall and building insulation. In addition to being an expert hider, Acremonium can also be difficult to identify in a common spore trap, as these spores are often colorless and do not have any distinctive characteristics except for their awful smell. Generally speaking, Acremonium colonies are often gray, white, pink, or orange in color and are often moist when they are found in the early stages. If the mold has been thriving in your home for quite a while, this mold may look powdery. Because these characteristics could identify many different types of mold, it can be hard to tell them apart without a professional spore analysis.

Side Effects of Acremonium

Acremonium effects the body in many different ways. These fungi have been known to target people with immune-deficiencies and is particularly problematic for the elderly. This mold can cause fungal maxillary sinusitis, pneumonia, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. It can also cause allergies, hypersensitivity, and dermatitis.

Protecting Your Home from Acremonium

There are some things you can do to keep this mold from your home. Controlling the moisture in your home is the first step to preventing mold. Installing an effective ventilation system or dehumidifier around your home will help prevent mold from infesting your home. Make sure to remove wet or water damaged items around your home. If you suspect mold in your home, call Environmental Consulting and Contracting Group for a mold test.
