Scattered to gregarious in duff under live oaks, tanbark oak, and Sitka spruce; fruiting from fall through winter in coastal forests; common.
Edible.
Hygrophorus roseibrunneus was described in 1916 from material collected under oaks at Jasper Ridge (San Mateo County) near Stanford University. In southern and central California, the species is associated with oaks; in northern California it is associated with Sitka spruce.
