Television and movie actor Bernard Fox has died. He was 89.
The popular television funny man died at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys, Calif., of heart failure, the actor’s publicist told The Hollywood Reporter.
Fox was best known for playing Dr. Bombay, a womanizing warlock, on “Bewitched” from 1966 to 1972. He also famously appeared as Captain Winston Havlock in the 1999 flick “The Mummy” and in “Titantic” as Col. Archibald Gracie.
The Welsh actor, who retired from the spotlight in 2004, also played the bumbling Col. Crittendon on “Hogan’s Heroes” through the late ’60s, and lent his voice to the Disney movie “The Rescuers” and its sequel “The Rescuers Down Under.”
Fox, the son of Queenie and Gerald Lawson, both of whom were stage actors, comes from a long line of performers.
He began his acting career as a young child, but put his goals on hold for a stint in the Royal Navy, resuming his career in the entertainment industry after the end of World War II. He has garnered well over 100 television and film credits over the course of his career.
He leaves behind his daughter Amanda and his wife Jacqueline, whom he married in 1961.
