I have decided to include synonyms in the alphabetical listings because I have found it frustrating to find that some growers do not stay currrent in their plant names and as such we the consumer end up buying a plant that we feel is an exotic different species only to find that it is a plant that we have had for years under the correct name. An example, Brassavola rhopalorrhachis Rchb.f is actually the common species Brassavola nodosa [L]Lindley.

A genus comprised of 3 species from the Caribbean islands of Cuba, Jamaica, Bermuda and the Bahamas with small, ovoid-cylindrical to ellipsoid psuedobulbs with one to two apical leaves that are fleshy-rigid and have erose margins. They have an erect, terminal, few flowered inflorescence with small bracts that give rise to small to medium showy flowers with speading or not spreading sepals and petals, a tubular base of the spurless lip which spreads in the front and has papillae and hairs on the central veins. They have 8 pollina instead of 4 in Cattleya. This genus is allied to Broughtonia and Laeliopsis and can be interbred with Cattleya as well.

This Andean genus consisting of 14 or so species has pseudobulbs with lateral inflorescence, a spurless flower with the sepals and petals slightly longer than the lip that has no basal claw, the basal callus is solid and quadrate, and is surrounded by the column that has fleshy wing-like lobes on each side and 2 hard pollina connected to a small oblong stipe and a round viscidium.

This is a small genus of maybe 4 medium sized epiphytic species in tropical South America and Trinidad that is similar to Epidendrum but differs in having hollow horn like processes on the lip. It has also been known as Diacrium Lindley. This genus provides a hollow cavity inside the pseudobulb and is accessed at the base from which ants can get in and out. The leaves appear mostly on the upper end of the pseudobulb from which a terminal, racemose inflorescence arises with the few to several flowers held at the apex. The flowers open widely and, in contrast to Epidendrum, the lip is entirely free, and the column is broad and concave holding the 4 pollina with caudicles. This genus enjoys as bright sun as it can stand and they need no dry rest so water and fertilize evenly year round.

There are approximately 26 species in this primarily terrestrial species found in the temperate zones of the new world, Europe, North Africa and east to the Himalayas and grow in calcareous soils which are very basic in 'ph' value. The plant has numerous roots giving rise to an erect stem carrying sessile, plicate leaves and blooms on a terminal, racemose, laxly to densely flowered inflorescence carrying suberect, white, pink to yellow flowers with a sessile ovary. The sepals and petals are subsimilar, free, connivent, the lip is 2 lobed and adnate to the column base and has a concave to saccate hypochile. The epichile is recurved and has longitudinal ridges and the long erect column has large stigma and a short to absent rostellum, the anther is unhinged and the 2 pollina are clavate and mealy.

There are 147 some species in the genus that is largely found in India, S. E. Asia, and out to the Philippines and adjacent Pacific Islands. They require shade, humidity and plenty of water while growing, gradually reducing as the growths mature but never allow the plant to dry out completely. A genus of small epiphytes with fibrous roots and terete leaves that have an short inflorescence with one to several flowers in a small cluster that arises from sheaths at the base of the leaves.They flower more than once a year and can be divided after flowering. The solitary to a few in a cluster, resupinate flowers have erect, connivent sepals with the laterals forming an saccate or spurlike mentum with the column foot, narrow petals and a lip that is adnate to the column foot by a long, incumbent claw, entire, often with longitudinal calli and a short, dilated above, 2 lobed or with 2 spathulate, erect armed column and an elongate foot all with 8, sessile pollina.

There are 3 species in this new world fan-shaped epiphytic genus. They are characterized by having deciduous leaves with imbricating distichous leaf sheaths which produce the fan-shape plant. The small pseudobulbs can be either obvious and ovate in shape [C. surinamensis] or hidden within the leaf sheaths. The inflorescence is single flowered and arises from the base of the sheaths giving rise to a flower that has the sepals and petals similar in shape and size, the lip is ovate and has a large rib-shaped cupped callus on the claw or on the base of the lip blade. The column, which is curved, has a broad wing on each side from the base to the midpoint carrying 4 pollina in 2 unequal pairs.

This is a small epiphytic genus of nine species that are found in tropical Central and South America. The species were taken from the genus Chaubardia as they had no psuedobulbs and can be distinguished by a distinctive slender rostellum. This genus is characterized by the fan-shaped plant made up of imbricating leaf sheaths on a very short stem, there are no, or, very small pseudobulbs giving rise to a basal, single flowered inflorescence. The fleshy flowers lie on the substrate a ways from the plant and have spreading sepals and petals, a very short, thick column with a hooked rostellum, a lip that does not surround the column and there are two unequal pairs of pollina connected to a quadrate stipe and a hooked viscidium.

Twenty [2 are in contention C javanica and C pusilla] small, mostly leafless epiphytes make up this warm growing genus from India, S.E. Asia, Indonesia, and Australia. They are best mounted on wood or cork and need high humidity, moderate shade and regular water, but they like to dry out between waterings and, after growth has stopped, less water is required. The ephemeral flowers have lateral sepals and petals that are subequal and are often adnate to the column foot, the lip is more or less clawed, hinged to the apex of the column foot and is pouched or spurred, 3 lobed, lateral lobes larger and erect, midlobe small, the disc has a finger-like callus and is hirsute-pubescent, the short, semiterete column has a long foot, a shallow clinandrium, a deep set stigma, a deflexed, bifid rostellum, an anther cap with 2 long-filiform setae, 4 pollina in 2 closely appressed, unequal, sessile pairs and a sublinear stipe.

There are now 7 species in this genus and they are found in Central and South America as epiphytes and rarely lithophytes with the largest concentration of species in the Andes of Colombia at elevations of 300 to 2000 meters where they are cool to warm growing orchids that need shady humid conditions and never should be allowed to dry out completely. This genus is characterized by the lack of pseudobulbs, with the leaves forming a fan-shaped plant with an axillary, single flowered inflorescence arising from the axils of the leaf sheaths which gives rise to the flowers that have lateral sepals forming a semi tube, a not saccate lip that surrounds the column, a prominent callus, tongue or keel-like, in the mid portion of the lip, a clavate column without a ventral keel and four flattened pollina on a short stipe attached to a flat, cordiform viscidum.

Chysis is a genus of 10 epiphytic or lithophytic plants found from Mexico south to Peru and east to Andean Venezuela. Chysis is characterized by epiphytes and the occasional lithophyte with clustered fusiform psuedobulbs, carrying distichous and plicate leaves that are deciduous. The plant itself is often pendulous growing. The inflorescence arises from the side of the old psuedobulb as a new one arises and is laxly racemose and gives rise to a few showy flowers with equal sized petals and sepals, a three lobed lip that is attached to the column foot and has at it's base a callus with several crests holding 8 pollina.

A terrestrial genus with 2 species occuring in south east Asia as well as New Guinea with an elongate creeping rhizome giving rise to short, leafy shoots at intervals before climbing up shrubs or tree trunks that bloom on terminal, peduncle from 4" to 12" [10 to 30 cm] long, rachis slowly lengthens as the several, 1 to 2 flowers open at a time inflorescence carrying resupinate flowers with free sepals and petals, a lip that is saccate basally, trilobed apically and has large side lobes as well as having an arched column carrying 2 pollina.

This small monopodial epiphytic genus occurs from the northern Himalayas to northern Borneo and has 5 distinct species characterized by the pendulous stem carrying narrow leathery leaves and an axillary, racemose, many flowered inflorescence. The lip is firmly adnate to the column foot, urceolate, lobulate above, lateral lobes erect, a short triangular midlobe with a gently curved, cylindric spur. There are 4 pollina in unequal pairs on linear stipes with a large subquadrate viscidium

There are 2 species in this east Indian epiphytic genus related to Aerides with a long pendant stem carrying oblong, terete, unequally bilobed apically, acute leaves that blooms on an axillary, racemose, short, few to many flowered inflorescence with sepals and petals spreading, an immobile, 3 lobed, spur gently arched, cylindric lip with either an erect central projection on the back wall or a decurved, shelf-like back wall callus and a flap-like front wall callus, there is no median septum and the erect, cylindric, column has the foot decurrent on the back wall or free, has long slender stipes, a large viscidium, 4 pollina in two masses, each divided into free halves.

One of the largest mini flowered genera of it's subtribe that is widely distributed over the entire tropical Asia and out to the Philippines and south to Australia. This genus is composed of 88 different, compact, small to medium sized epiphytes that have flat fleshy or terete leaves. The inflorescence can be short or long, simple or branched, erect or pendulous and always multiflowered. The 3-lobed lip is spurred and has a sort of a foot that is attached to the margins of the side lobes and the short column with a short foot and has 4 pollina that are united in 2 round bodies.
The genus was established by C. L. Blume in 1825 using Cleisostoma sagittatum as the type species.

There are 2 species in this epiphytic genus confined to Thailand and Vietnam characterized by an elongate, slender stem carrying laxly, many terete leaves blooming on lateral, racemose inflorescence with small bracts and has many small flowers with free lateral speals that are larger than the dorsal sepal and petals that are small than the sepals, a lip adnate to the base of the column, spurred, 3 lobed, spur longer than the sepals, inside with a "Y"-shaped callus on the base wall but has no septum. The column is short, stout and without a column foot and has a large rostellum, a concave stigma and 4 waxy, subglobose pollina in 2 pairs, each pair with a caudicle attached by a common stipe to a large viscidium.

There are 66 species in this terrestrial genus allied to Pogonia spread from Florida to Brazil. They are characterized by having a slender, erect stem arising from a subterranean nodular or fibrous tuber, carrying cauline, conduplicate towards the base, lanceolate or ovate, acute or acuminate leaves arranged singly at intervals along the stem. The inflorescence is terminal, laxly few flowered and has conspicuous leafy bracts giving rise to showy, large, yellow, pink or purple flowers with free, subsimilar sepals and petals and an entire or obscurely 3 lobed lip, that is funnel shaped, without a spur and has a central longitudinal callus. The column is elongate and subclavate and carries 2 mealy pollina lacking a viscidium. They differ from Pogonia by the different root, larger size and larger campanulate flowers.

There are seven species spread from Mexico south to Venezuela. They are generally fragrant and are grown like the Catasetum yet differ in having perfect flowers, ie. that contain both sexes. The pseudobulb is shorter than those of Catasetum and have deciduous, plicate leaves, a pendulous, basal inflorescence that arise after leaf fall in the fall carrying bisexual, fragrant flowers with a short column, as broad as it is long. This genus requires abundant fertilizer and water while in its growth phase and a distinct lessening of both after leaf fall.
