Konami to Launch TurboGrafx-16 Mini Retro Console

Just like the other classic consoles we've seen re-released in mini form, Konami will include a number of pre-loaded games with the system.

Nintendo, Sony, and Sega have all decided to offer us mini versions of their old consoles with a bunch of the most popular games preloaded. Now Konami is doing the same thing for the TurboGrafx-16, a console far fewer of us have played games on before.

The TurboGrafx-16 was known as the PC Engine in Japan and proved very popular there. However, when the console reached US shores in 1989 it was competing against the Genesis and SNES and therefore never stood a chance. It still sold quite well, but was ignored by third-parties and didn't have a second controller port. Even so, it had a great selection of games and soon we'll be able to experience them again.

As Polygon reports, although a price and release date have yet to be confirmed, Konami will be releasing the retro console as the TurboGrafx-16 Mini in the US, the PC Engine Mini in Japan, and the PC Engine Core Grafx Mini in Europe. There will be two controller ports and the controller will be an updated version of the original gamepad.

In total, roughly 650 games were released for the PC Engine, with only 121 of those localized and 18 being exclusive to the US market. So far, only six games have been confirmed for inclusion with the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, which are:

  • Alien Crush
  • Dungeon Explorer
  • New Adventure Island
  • Ninja Spirit
  • R-Type
  • Ys Book I & II

There's bound to be some regional variation for the preloaded games, but it would be nice to see some of the most highly-regarded titles make an appearance. For example, Devil's Crush, Military Madness, Bonk's Adventure, Bomberman '93, Legendary Axe, Blazing Lazers, Neutopia, and Dragon's Curse, are just a few that regularly appear on must-play lists for the system.

Although we don't have a release date, it seems likely Konami would want to get this mini console on stores shelves in time for the holiday season later this year. Hopefully they won't do a Nintendo and manufacture enough to meet what could be very high demand for this classic console. I suspect imports may also be popular depending on how the preloaded games vary per region.
