Object description :

"William Alister Macdonald (1861-1956) "view Of Papeete In Tahiti" Great English Watercolorist, Uk"
SUBLIME watercolor by William Alister Macdonald representing a landscape of Tahiti, signed with his usual monogram WAM, and located Papeete at the bottom left. Out of frame format at sight; 19.5x36cm and 35.5x51.5cm including frame. This is a superb watercolor by Alister Mc Donald which represents here one of his two favorite subjects, Tahiti, very precisely a view of the port of Papeete, with in the foreground several period ships, with sails or steam, then the town and a church, then in the distance the famous mountains of Tahiti. As usual, the artist treats this subject in watercolor, his favorite technique, the one in which he excels and thanks to which he will achieve great success. His touch is the most delicate, his drawing the most precise and finally his coloring the most subtle. Mac Donald is today recognized throughout the world thanks to his views of Tahiti, and then for his views of England and Scotland where he was born. Its coast is therefore international and some of its watercolors achieve very good results in sales regularly exceeding 3000€ with peaks beyond 4500€. Watercolorist of landscapes, notably scenes from French Polynesia, Europe, Great Britain and London. Born in Brora, northern Scotland, the son of a minister in the Free Church of Scotland. Began working as a bank clerk in Thurso before moving to the City of London branch in Lothbury in 1880. He attended evening classes at St Martin's School of Art under John Parker RWS and with the Gilbert Garret Sketch Club, began painting scenes of the city and along the River Thames. From 1892, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Fine Art Society. After a visit to Portugal in 1895, he traveled regularly in Europe and North Africa, returning frequently to Florence, the Italian lakes, Venice and the French Riviera. In 1921, at the age of sixty, he moved to Tahiti and established a reputation for his watercolors among American writers such as Charles Nordhoff, James Norman Hall, and Zane Grey. Returning to London in 1935, he exhibited several exhibitions: 'Among the Islands of the South Seas' and 'Old London prior to 1914' at the Arlington Gallery on Old Bond Street, organized by his wife, the miniaturist painter Lucy Winifred Macdonald . The latter was purchased in its entirety by Lord Wakefield and donated to the Guildhall Art Gallery. At the age of ninety, Macdonald returned to spend the last years of his life in Moorea with his Tahitian daughter and six grandchildren, and exhibited at the Premier Salon de Tahiti in 1955. The collections of his works are held at the Guildhall Art Gallery, the British Museum, the London Metropolitan Archives and the Musée de Tahiti. This watercolor is in very good condition for its age, I just point out 2/3 tiny spots of oxidation, but very light, moreover I can have them reduced by a professional on request, within a few weeks. Delivered in a beautiful old frame but not from the period Work guaranteed authentic
