Described as a new species from savannas in western and western central tropical Africa as recently as 2006, this beautiful palm is a relatively slender stemmed, smaller Borassus, perhaps the smallest in the genus. Apart from its size, the glaucous, green leaves with weakly armed petioles set it apart from the African B. aethiopum and the Asian B. flabellifer. It seems to be faster growing than these other species and would make an excellent ornamental for the tropical garden. Like with all Borassus, seedlings require a very deep container to accommodate the first long tap root or "sinker" that emerges from the tennis ball-sized seed; alternatively, plant it in its permanent position in the ground.
