This giant perennial produces robust, cane-like stems that can grow to 10 m tall from an underground tuber. Large, spreading, compond, fresh green leaves are topped in autumn or early winter with masses of white, nodding flowers in a staggering display. Dahlia imperialis is native from northeastern Mexico to Colombia between 1500 and 1700 m. In cultivation this rare, white-flowered form does best in mild, frost free climates, where its stems last through the winter. In colder climates the tuberous rhizome can last through freezes if generously mulched.
