One of the typical trees of the Mediterranean, the flat-topped crown of the Stone Pine is a common sight in coastal regions from Spain to Turkey. Because it has been widely cultivated for millenia for its edible seeds and ornamental qualities, it is hard to say where it was originally native to, most likely is the western Mediterranean though. Pinus pinea makes an outstanding ornamental for a wide range of temperate climates and tolerates coastal and other adverse conditions.
