A moderate to large Strelitzia, usually about 3 m (10 ft.) or rarely to 8 m (26 ft.) tall, from high altitude in the mountains of northern South Africa and Swaziland, similar to S. nicolai but more compact and flowering much earlier with pretty, white and bluish, bird-like flowers appearing from large, dark bracts.
