A moderately large, epiphytic or terrestrial bromeliad with broad leaves and a large, branched inflorescence with yellow and red bracts. Tillandsia lajensis is native to cloud forest from southern Colombia to northern Peru between 2100 and 3500 m. Even though it is very tropical looking, it can take considerable cold and is best suited to cultivation in cool climates such as Ireland, coastal northern California, Tasmania or New Zealand.
