Description

This is a late flowering species which starts its growth in the autumn, just as most of the other species are starting to enter their dormancy.

The flowers are superbly shaped with softest, blackcurrant-sorbet petals set around a greatly elongated, deeper
purple-violet, intricately cleft lip. The flowers appear in late September and early October, two months after the related puberula (which is wrongly regarded by some as the same plant)!

Perhaps because of the unusual time that it starts its growth cycle, this likes a sheltered spot, out of the wind and away from cold exposed spots, preferably in a peaty garden soil. It does superbly well under airy frost-free glass.
