Description

(this is the plant formerly called C. trochopteranthum but it is not “coum alpinum”, or “cilicium alpinum”)

A wonderful Turkish winter-flowering species. This has silver-patterned and clouded leaves, and masses of deep pink, strongly honey-scented flowers over a long period beginning in January but lasting until April.

Its is fully hardy here and difficult to fault, growing reliably and seeding gently but nicely. We have it in a humus-rich soil which sits over a well drained, rocky garden area as well as in pots.

The discarded name of trochopteranthum was easier to deal with if you think of heliCOPTER – anthum then change ‘heli’ to ‘tro’. Having said this, the “experts”, having insisted that this plant  was not to be called by its original name of “alpinum” (and arguing their case accordingly), have decided that “oops” it is to be called alpinum after all.  Ignoring this rather silly and irresponsible nomenclature, the plant itself is superb and I have to grudgingly admit that alpinum is, after all, easier to pronounce!
