Clerodendrum paniculatum, The Pagoda Flower is named for the shape of its flowers. This shrub spreads by means of root suckers to create a nice clump of stems, each producing a scarlet pagoda shaped inflorescence. It will flower all summer long and into the fall. As a bonus, Pagoda Flower is an excellent nectar source for butterflies. Keep in mind, even in South Florida, this shrub goes dormant in wintertime. An excellent time to prune it to 6-12″, so during the growing season it can leaf out and produce its many flower. The most common color variety is the scarlet form, but there is a pale-yellow variety which is not found in the horticultural trade very often.
