Arisaema (Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Cobra Lily)
The flowrers are made up of a hooded tube and an elongated or rounded spadix inside the spathe. They can be beautiful or bizarre, but they always invite comment. Tall species are great "pop-up"plants among shade plants such as hostas or ararums. Different species can offer a succession of bloom from early spring to early summer. All can have showy heads of red fruit in fall.

In the garden arisaemas require shade and well-drained soil that is not dry in spring and early summer. Plant corms about 5" deep in humusy or gravelly well-drained soil. A loose mulch can help with species of borderling hardiness.

All our arisaema corms are BLOOMING SIZE. They are shipped in fall packed in dry sphagnum moss as soon as they are completly dry. We can not ship before this process is complete because the corms will rot in transit. After receiving the corms, keep them cool and dry, around 40 degrees F. is ideal. After potting, water only lightly until the shoots appear. Overwatering is the greatest danger. After growth begins, keep them in cold frames or a cold greenhouse.

Tall, stately species to 5 feet recently found on the island of Shikoku, Japan. The spadix is often purple, contrasting with the green spathe. Attractive foliage, midseason bloom. Rare, but easy to grow. USDA Zones 6-9

Tall, vigorous East Asian species to 3' called "dancing crane" in Japanese, which it resembles. There is one leaf with a least 15 leaflets, with a green flower held high above the leaf. The spathe is green, with a very long, yellow, whip-like spadix that arches up and descends. Easy.

Wrongly listed in some books as a synonym of A. sikokianum, this blooms 3 weeks later here. The spadix is not bulbous, and the purple spathe hood droops way down over the tube. Name is from "zazen", Japanese Buddhist meditation, as the flower recalls a bowed monk meditating. Hard to find. Good garden plant. Mid-spring. Rhymes with "ma can sew".

Striking species from central Japan to 3' tall. The stem is boldly mottled in a snakeskin pattern. The flower is pale green with white stripes, with an erect hood, white inside. Early to mid-season.
