How Springfield-area girls basketball teams fared in Thanksgiving tournaments

A couple of girls basketball teams in the State Journal-Register area claimed Thanksgiving tournament titles over the weekend. That includes Rochester and Petersburg PORTA/A-C Central.

Here's a look at the Thanksgiving tournaments involving Springfield-area teams:

AT PITTSFIELD

Marley Roberts and Carson Arthalony carried Petersburg PORTA/A-C Central to a pair of victories on Friday and the Bluejays finished 4-0 to win the girls Pittsfield Saukee Turkey Tournament.  

Roberts and Arthalony combined for 35 points in the title game and defeated Pittsfield 38-34. Arthalony made five field goals with a 3-pointer and went 7-for-9 from the line to score a game-high 18 points. Roberts followed with seven field goals, made 3 of 4 free throws and added 17.  

The tandem combined for 42 points in PORTA’s 60-32 victory over Liberty in an earlier game. Arthalony knocked down six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points. Roberts made eight shots and ended with 20.

AT TAYLORVILLE 

Rochester prevailed with a 53-52 overtime victory over host Taylorville on Saturday to win the Thanksgiving tournament by going 5-0. 

Rochester’s Kaylen Reed and Emma Dixon were named to the all-tournament team, along with Taylorville’s Addison Tarr, Kyleigh Heimsness and Aubrey Kietzman. Hillsboro’s Layne Rupert also reached the list. 

Jacksonville dropped to Bethalto Civic Memorial 50-28 on the final day. Tate Morrisey led the Crimsons with 10 points with two 3s. 

Taylorville and Rochester each won their respective games on Friday. 

Rochester took care of Jacksonville 55-22, and Taylorville defeated Mount Zion 53-41. 

Rochester’s Kaylen Reed scored a game-high 21 points with 15 coming in the first half. Emma Dixon provided 11 of her 13 points in the first half for Rochester. 

Zara Harper led Jacksonville with eight points in the loss.      

AT GALESBURG 

Springfield High posted two wins on Saturday and closed out the Galesburg Thanksgiving Shootout with a 3-2 record. 

The Senators defeated Champaign Centennial 47-9 and beat Peoria Manual 76-42. Emma Scheffler nailed five 3-pointers and had a game-high 15 points and teammate Megan McMullan added 11 points against Centennial.  

Zakiyah Lott led Springfield with 12 points and Scheffler converted three more 3s in the win against Manual. MacMullan finished with 10 and the Senators put all 12 players into the scoring column.  

Sacred Heart-Griffin finished the shootout with a 4-1 record after defeating Metamora 56-49 and losing its first game of the season to Washington, 62-40, on Friday. 

A 22-point game by Callie Huston boosted the Cyclones past Metamora. Maggie Fleischli scored 14 points for SHG.

SHG made six 3-pointers in its loss to Washington. Reese Watson had two 3s and led the Cyclones with 10 points. Caroline Lambert put in three 3s and she and Izzy Hassebrock finished with nine points apiece. 

Chatham Glenwood concluded the shootout with a 1-2 mark. Washington went unbeaten to finish 5-0 and Galesburg had two wins on Saturday to go 4-1.

AT WAVERLY 

Carrollton erased a six-point deficit after three quarters and rallied past Auburn 49-42 to win the Waverly Thanksgiving tournament on Wednesday.  

Carrollton (4-0) made 14 of 18 free throws in the fourth period and outscored Auburn 19-6 in the quarter to seal the championship. Lauren Flowers went 6-for-8 from the line, made a 3-pointer in the fourth period and scored a game-high 22 points for Carrollton.  

Kendal Conway provided a team-high 18 points for Auburn (3-1). The Trojans led 36-30 after three quarters and Conway scored five of Auburn’s six points in the fourth. Karlissa Clark and Addison Wheatley chipped in seven points apiece. 

South County defeated Kincaid South Fork 44-34 for third place. The Vipers buried six 3s in the first half and led 26-14 at the break. Mae Bandelow drilled three treys in the first half and she finished with a team-high 12 points. Aubrey Shumacher made a couple 3s and added 10, while Brooke Hermes had a 3 and scored nine for South County. 

Angelina Ippolito had a game-high 16 points for Kincaid.  

Wheatley and Clark made the all-tournament team. Flowers and Paige Henson received the honors for Carrollton. The all-tournament team also included South County’s Caroline Peters and Bandelow, and Gianna Pop (Kincaid South Fork), Abby Hendricks (North Mac) and Megan Reynolds (Concord Triopia). 

AT MOUNT STERLING 

Cami Hurt delivered a game-high 20 points and Jacksonville Routt secured third place with a 51-35 victory over Hamilton West Hancock at the Lady Hornet Classic on Saturday.  

Hurt made seven field goals and finished 6-of-8 at the free throw line. Paige Creviston had two field goals, including a 3, and went 5-for-6 at the line for 10 points.  

Hurt had a big tournament. She poured in a game-high 31 points in Routt’s 61-53 win over Pittsfield on Friday. She had 18 points at the break to help Routt take a 32-29 lead into halftime. She finished making 12 field goals and went 7-for-9 from the charity stripe. Creviston and Kelly Peters scored nine points apiece for Routt.   

Mendon Unity, which handed Routt its first loss of the season 64-32 on Wednesday, defeated Brown County 63-58 to win the championship on Saturday.  

Routt trailed Mendon Unity 14-2 after one quarter. Hurt was the only Routt player in double figures with a team-high 10 points. Sophia Shaffer led two other Mendon Unity players in double figures with 16 points, while two other teammates added nine apiece. 

In other games on Saturday, Barry Western defeated Beardstown 50-27 for seventh place, and Liberty beat Rushville-Industry 45-26 in the ninth-place game. Pittsfield took fifth place with a 53-42 win over Sciota West Prairie. 

On Friday, Beardstown defeated Rushville-Industry 33-31. Kylynn Maltby hit a pair of 3s and finished with 14 points for Beardstown. 

AT PANA 

Emily Schoen had 10 of her 13 points in the third quarter and Gillespie defeated Okaw Valley 53-28 at the Thanksgiving tournament on Friday.  

Erika Gill had all nine of her points in the first half for Gillespie. Jenna Clark and Mia Brawner added eight points apiece.
