Syzygium paniculatum

AUSTRALIAN CHERRY

Percy Broell planted an Australian cherry that still grows strong on the corner of Taylor Street and Presidio Drive. Described by Broell in his 1937 Presidio Plant Identification as Eugenia myrtifolia, Syzygium paniculatum produces edible fruit that has a sour apple taste. Its new leaves turn a glossy red and contrast nicely with the green leaves of older growth. Usually found in shrub form, the Australian cherry can also grow into a tree form as Presidio Park's specimen has done.
