GERALD SCARFE | PINK FLOYD’S “THE WALL” – WIFE AND TEACHER

Scarfe (b. 1936) has enjoyed a significant artistic career. In the early 1970s Bernard Levin stated that "in Scarfe we can recognize the heir of Hieronymus Bosch". For over half a century he was the cartoonist for The Sunday Times and has also worked for The New Yorker, the Evening Standard, Private Eye and Time. His work has been shown at the V&A, the Tate and the National Portrait Galley. Has has also designed for the stage and screen. He has, famously, tended to retain his original artwork. A single-owner sale of his work at Sotheby's in April 2017 saw the first auction of material from the artist's archive. Scarfe's 1971 short film, Long Drawn-Out Trip: Sketches from Los Angeles was shown on BBC television. Nick Mason of Pink Floyd saw it and rang Roger Waters to say 'You have to check this guy out'. According to Scarfe, "Roger did, and called Nick back - 'We definitely have to get him involved, he's fucking mad.'" So it was that Gerald Scarfe was invited to work with Pink Floyd and contribute to their album, film and stage show, "The Wall". Scarfe has been called "the 'fifth' member of the band" or "the Sir Francis Drake at the court of Elizabeth I".
