LONDON -- Elton John lit a second "Candle in the Wind" on Saturday, updating his hit song about Marilyn Monroe with lyrics to honor his friend and "England's rose," Princess Diana.

The pop star accompanied himself on a black grand piano, singing the new, mournful version in a strong and forceful voice at Diana's funeral in Westminster Abbey.Photos by The Associated PressElton John sings "Candle in the Wind" at Diana's funeral.

Goodbye England's rose; — may you ever grow in our hearts. — You were the grace that placed itself — where lives were torn apart. — You called out to our country, — and you whispered to those in pain. — Now you belong to heaven, — and the stars spell out your name. —

And it seems to me you lived your life — like a candle in the wind — never fading with the sunset — when the rain set in. — And your footsteps will always fall here, — among England's greenest hills; — your candle's burned out long before — your legend ever will. —

Loveliness we've lost; — these empty days without your smile. — This torch we'll always carry — for our nation's golden child. — And even though we try, — the truth brings us to tears; — all our words cannot express — the joy you brought us through the years. —

Goodbye England's rose, — from a country lost without your soul, — who'll miss the wings of your compassion — more than you'll ever know. — Elton John

"Your footsteps will always fall here along England's greatest hills. Your candle's burned out long before your legend ever will," he sang of the princess. He called her "our nation's golden child."

Many mourners in the abbey -- and among the hundreds of millions of people watching live on television -- wept. In nearby Hyde Park, thousands watched a simulcast, hugging each other and singing along.

The singer and Diana shared a concern for AIDS activism around the world, and last saw each other at the July funeral of slain fashion designer Gianni Versace. John broke down in tears at that service and was comforted by Diana, who lent an arm and some words of support.

Surrounded by the plaques and tombs of England's famous, he kept his composure Saturday and channeled his feelings into the new lyrics.

"It was a very personal and special tribute from Elton, and a very emotional performance for him," a statement from John's office said. "He wanted to deliver it to the best of his ability. He wanted to do it for Diana, and I think that is what helped him through."

A recording of the Diana version of "Candle in the Wind" likely will be released later this month, with all profits going to the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fund for her favorite charities.

Music industry experts have predicted it could become the biggest-selling single of all time, passing Bing Crosby's "White Christmas."

After finishing the song Saturday, John looked down, then longingly skyward and then down again before returning to his pew.

He then joined the rest of the congregation in a final hymn for his friend.Princess Diana
