Strange Wonderful Things Rare and exotic plants |

Here's another rarity that you won't find in your local nursery. Impatiens latiflora - the "Indian Angel" Impatiens - is a beautiful species from northeast India that is new to cultivation. This striking plant flowers all year long, with large, intense-pink blooms along the tops of the branches. This is a stunning plant that deserves to be more widely grown. Fresh seeds are rarely seen for sale. Impatiens latiflora is a perennial species that grows to about 18 inches tall and wide. Its big, lush leaves get 4 to 6 inches long. The flowers are clustered in racemes of 4 or 5 at the ends of the new growth. The 2 inch long blooms appear practically all year long for me. Their color is mostly pink, with some yellow and white at the center of the flower. Impatiens latiflora is a true species, not a cultivated hybrid. There is very little information on this plant, but other Impatiens species from the same region tend to be happiest between 50 and 80 degrees F (10-27 degrees C), and often lag in hot conditions, especially if nights are warm. This species is untested in hot temperatures, so consider it experimental above 85 degrees F (29 C). It is probably not frost-hardy, so protect it from freezing temperatures. It grows well indoors in a pot. Like most Impatiens, it prefers moist, well-draining soil, and filtered sun or bright shade. Protect it from strong afternoon sun. Over about 40-45% humidity is recommended.
