'Back to the Future Part III' turns 30: Where are Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd now?

In the third "Back to the Future," which sees Doc and Marty travel to 1885, Lea Thompson took on two roles: Marty's mom Lorraine, which she played in the prior two movies, as well as Maggie McFly, one of Marty's ancestors. Since the series, Thompson has done it all, from "Dancing With the Stars" to her own sitcom, "Caroline in the City." But she's invariably recognized as Lorraine. "People know me because of these movies, it's just an amazing part," she told USA TODAY.

Thompson, who turns 59 this month, most recently starred as Kathryn Kennish in ABC Family's "Switched at Birth" from 2011 to 2017. She has also appeared in several films, such as 2018's "The Year of Spectacular Men," which she also directed. Thompson stays close with her "Back to the Future" co-star Christopher Lloyd as they hit fan conventions: "We're keeping the dream alive," she told USA TODAY in 2015.

Fox also did double duty in "Part III," reprising his starring role as Marty McFly from the previous two movies as well as taking on the part of Marty's 1880s ancestor Seamus McFly. Fox was an established star as Alex P. Keaton in NBC's "Family Ties" when he landed the role of Marty.

Diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1991, Fox announced his condition to the world in 1998. In 2000, he launched the Michael J. Fox, who turns 59 in June, has been married to his "Family Ties" co-star, actress Tracy Pollan, 59, since 1988.  In 2010, he starred in CBS' "The Good Wife," playing an attorney who suffers from a neurological condition. He reprised the role in 2020 for the series' streaming spin-off, "The Good Fight." He also starred in TV's "Designated Survivor" in 2018.

"Back to the Future" isn't the only trilogy Fox has starred in. The actor voiced the title character in all three "Stuart Little" movies.

"Part III" also saw Christopher Lloyd return as eccentric scientist "Doc" Emmett Brown, who invents the time-traveling DeLorean. Lloyd has continued to act in TV shows since his "Back to the Future" days, including voicing a part on the animated series "Cyberchase." Lloyd put on the lab coat again, reprising his role in the "Back to the Future" TV series in the early '90s.

Lloyd lent his voice to Adult Swim's "Robot Chicken" in 2011 and appeared in "A Million Ways to Die in the West" in 2014. In a 2015 interview with USA TODAY, Lloyd said he's game to call up famous lines when he meets fans on the street.

"People always want to hear 'Great Scott!' and 'Roads? Where we're going, we don't need roads,' " Lloyd said with a smile. "I'm happy to do it, if I'm not in a rush.

Lloyd married Lisa Loiacono in 2016.

Thomas F. Wilson was the perfect "Back to the Future" villain Biff, reprising his bullying role in each movie. In "Part III," Wilson also played another antagonist: 1880s outlaw Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen, pictured far right. The actor went on to voice characters in "SpongeBob SquarePants" from 2001 to 2019 and voiced a loud, egomaniacal banana on Nickelodeon's "Pig Goat Banana Cricket" from 2015 to 2017.

In "Part III," James Tolkan played Marshall James Strickland, holding Marty at gunpoint. In the prior two films, Tolkan cemented his place in pop culture as high school principal Gerald Strickland, telling Marty McFly, "You're a slacker." Now 88, Tolkan has continued to portray forceful roles, such as the memorable aircraft carrier commander in 1986's "Top Gun." His most recent role was in 2015's "Bone Tomahawk.

"Part III" saw the introduction of Doc's love interest: Clara Clayton, played by Mary Steenburgen.

Steenburgen, 67, has worked steadily since "Part III," appearing in projects like "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "Orange is the New Black," "Justified" and "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist." Here she is pictured alongside her co-stars Daniel Tay (center) and James Caan from the 2003 film "Elf.
