A female Thomas Jefferson onstage? It could happen.

Hamilton, the smash Broadway musical that tells the story of the founding father through hip-hop music, has made waves by casting famous (and famously white) figures from American history as people of color, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and, of course, Alexander Hamilton.

Hip-hop 'Hamilton' comes to Broadway

Speaking at an event at the Smithsonian Musuem of American History in Washington, D.C., Friday, the show's creator and star Lin Manuel Miranda was asked by a fan in the audience if he could ever see women taking on the iconic roles in his musical.

"It's a complicated answer," he said. "My only trouble with doing it on Broadway is (music) keys. Because changing keys is a pain. You can actually hear in (his first musical, In the Heights) how tough it is just to write a duet for a guy and a girl to sing together. It's a challenge as a writer for them both  to sound good. So that's my trouble."

"That being said, no one's voice is set in high school," he continued. "So I'm totally open to women playing founding fathers once this goes into the world. I can't wait to see kick-ass women Jeffersons and kickass women Hamiltons once this gets to schools."

Considering the very, very enthusiastic reaction of the young women in the crowd, that seems like something that could happen.
