New 100-megapixel camera sensor costs $49,000

Phase One is expanding its modular medium format camera system with a 100MP sensor. That's right: 100 megapixels.

The new full-frame CMOS sensor complements Phase One's XF Camera System, which was introduced last June, and goes well beyond the traditional specifications of a full-frame sensor.

While the company's 50MP IQ250 was the first medium format back to include CMOS technology, its 44 x 33mm sensor pales in comparison with the 100-megapixel back unveiled this week. The new 53.7 x 40.4mm sensor, co-developed by Sony, all but guarantees incredible detail when paired with quality lenses.

In addition to the incredible resolution, Phase One's new XF back delivers 16-bit color, 15 stops of dynamic range, an ISO range of 50 to 12800, and long exposures up to 60 minutes. And thanks to the CMOS sensor, the live view shooting experience should be incredibly responsive.

Of course, all that tech is going to set you back a bit. Way, way back. Like a brand-new Lexus, more or less. With a price tag around $49,000, unless you're filthy rich or a working pro, this isn't going to be an impulse purchase.
