California brickellia

California brickellia is a mounding, spreading, evergreen perennial that grows to 2-7 feet tall and wide with a moderate to fast growth rate.

This drought tolerant plant has light yellow flowers in the summer and fall providing a noticeable pleasant fragrance during the hot summer evenings. One of the most delightful of all California native plants.
While it’s flowers may not be a show stopper the scent they provide definitely are.

Grow it among Gooseberries, Matilija poppy or flannel bush or under oaks.

Ecological Value

They also provide important fall habitat for pollinator insects including native bees, pollinator flies, butterflies and moths.

Historical Uses

The Navajo and Kumeyaay (Diegueño) peoples used it as a traditional medicinal plant for fevers, coughs, and prenatal complications. (ethnobotany database)

It is native to western North America from Baja California to Idaho to Oklahoma.

Habitat

In southern Ca. it is found in dry areas such as slopes, canyons, and foothills. In central to northern Ca. it inhabits areas such as meadows and openings in forest or woodland.
