Ranunculus asiaticus also called Persian buttercup or Turban buttercup flowers from February to June at altitudes ranging from sea level to 900 m in phrygana, garigue, cultivated fallow land and abandoned fields.
It is an Asian species that just reaches Europe in the southern Aegean regions. The flower is usually white (sometimes with a shade of pink) but can also be found much less commonly in a yellow and red version.
The red version can superficially be confused with Anemone coronaria but if you look under the flower (see the last photo just above) you will see that Ranuculus has small sepal-like segments just below the large large petal-like honey leaves. Anemone coronaria has petal-like perianths only with a single whorl of leaves a short distance below the flower.
