The plant has erect stems, branched above.

Sunny rocky habitat or dry meadows on calcareous soils.

Flowers

The flowers are pale blue to lilac, borne in rather flat-topped panicles, each flower has 12-20 florets.

Leaves

Pinnatisect leaf is deeply lobed, almost to the central midrib. Lower leaves: narrow lobes almost to central midrib with a short stalk.
Upper leaves: clasp the stem.

Fruits Seeds

Achene: a cluster of 1-seeded fruit with rough hairs.

Edible

Basal rosette leaves gathered between September and May, one of the best wild salads, crunchy and mild.
