Description

The young twigs and leafstalks are velvety.

The tree is rich in tannin and was used as a dye in the leather industry, the bark for its yellow-orange colour and the roots for the colour brown.

Flowers

Flowers are greenish-white. The flowers and the fruit sit on the branches in the shape of a pyramidal panicle.

Leaves

Pinnate row of leaflets on either side of the stem. 7-21 oval leaflets on either side of the stem, serrated, velvety.

Fruits Seeds

Drupe: outer fleshy parts surround a shell with a seed inside, 5 mm, brown to crimson, hairy.

Edible

Berries/Drupes: berries dried and ground are used as a spice (sumac) in Middle Eastern cooking. ‘Zaatar’, a well-known spice mix, includes sumac, thyme and grilled sesame seed.
