A tank cutter is a plumbing tool used to cut circular holes in sheet metal (steel and copper), plastic and wood.
Tank cutters are often used to cut holes in water tanks or boilers. This is necessary when the tank needs to be connected to a pump or bathroom appliance like a shower.
Some tank cutters are designed to be used with a carpenter’s brace.
However, nowadays, they are more commonly installed in the chuck of a hand-held power drill.
When the drill or brace is operated, the tank cutter rapidly rotates and a circular hole is cut by the steel blade.
The length of the blade on most tank cutters can be adjusted so that the tool can be used to cut a range of different sized holes. The distance between the edge of the blade and the pilot drill will be equal to the radius of your hole.
The capacity of most tank cutters ranges from 32mm to 125mm (1.25in – 5in).
