Report: Additions (and annotations) to fungi of Burma

Abstract 

The report adds or annotates 25 spp. of fungi in 13 taxonomic classes. Specimens are held in Herb. IMI and K. 

Introduction 

This is one of the contributions to the taxonomic and 

morphologic knowledge of fungi of Burma, the largest 

country in mainland Southeast Asia. It adds new, or 

annotates old, records to update their current inventory. 

No follow-up laboratory work was done to comment on 

these records. The additions and/or annotations are listed 

below by fungal group together with available data on 

hosts, locations, collectors, collection dates, and 

herbarium (IMI) and (K) accession numbers. 

1. Agaricomycetes 

1. Phanerochaete salmonicolor (Berk. & Broome) 

Jülich (= Corticium salmonicolor) on/from 

Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Rangoon Division, leg. 

F.B. Armitage, 14-ii-1981 (IMI 255694). 

2. Blastocladiomycetes 

1. Allomyces macrogynus (R. Emers.) R. Emers. & 

C.M. Wilson on/from indeterminate substrate, 

Burma, leg. R. Emerson, 28-iv-1989 (IMI 

332398). 

3. Coelomycetes 

1. Kirramyces epicoccoides (Cooke & Massee) J. 

Walker, B. Sutton & Pascoe, on/from Eucalyptus 

sp., Maymyo, leg. Maung Mya Thaung, 20-i-1974 

(IMI 185241) reported also as Phaeoseptoria 

eucalypti Hansf. (Thaung 2008). Cf. somewhat 

similar specimens of Cercospora sp. on/from 

Eucalyptus sp. in Burma (IMI 172865, 180778b) 

with teleomorphic initials probably of a 

Mycosphaerella. 

2. Phoma sp. on/from Eucalyptus camaldulensis, 

Rangoon Division, leg. F.B. Armitage, 14-ii-1981 

(IMI 255695). 

4. Dothideomycetes 

1. Capnodium spp. on/from Ficus (IMI 160461), 

Cassia siamea (IMI 185679) and Gossypium (IMI 

26090) in 1925. 

2. Dimerosporium gilgianum Henn. on underside of 

leaves of Retinodendron laurifolium Korth (?= R. 

lanceifolium Korth), Burma (Herb. Griffith No. 

412) per Hennings (1894). 

3. Meliola daviesii Hansf. on/from Jasminum sp., 

Insein, leg. E.J. Butler, 24-xi-1912 (IMI 58917). 

4. Pleospora sp. on/from Typha angustata 

(?angustifolia), Madaya, leg. U Thet Su, 18-xi- 

1928 (IMI 79770). Cf. Pleospora herbarum (= 

Pleospora typhae), Pleospora typharum and 

Pyrenophora typhicola (typhaecola) (= Pleospora 

typhicola, anamorph ?Phoma typharum) on/from 

Typha spp. 

5. Eurotiomycetes 

1. Penicillium ochrosalmoneum Udagawa isolated 

from milled grain of Oryza sativa, Burma, leg. ?S. 

Udagawa, 00-i-1957 (IMI 78258). 

6. Hyphomycetes 

1. Distocercospora pachyderma (Syd. & P. Syd.) N. 

Pons & B. Sutton (= Cercospora pachyderma 

Syd. & P. Syd.) on/from Dioscorea sp., 

Myaungmya, leg. U Thet Su, 8-xii-1928 (IMI 

79774). Note: C. carbonacea Miles was recorded 

on Dioscorea sp. in Burma in 1974 vide (IMI 

188961). C. carbonacea and C. pachyderma were 

reported from the same host plant sp., D. alata, in 

Puerto Rico and Philippines, respectively. Cf. 

Anamorphic Mycosphaerella dioscoreae (Pass.) 

Tomilin. 

7. Leotiomycetes 

1. Lophodermium vagulum M. Wilson & N.F. 

Robertson on/from Rhododendron spp. (Minter 

1984) in Northern Burma especially Kachin State 

bordering China and India. 

8. Oomycetes 

1. Phytophthora botryosa Chee on/from Hevea 

brasiliensis, Tenasserim Division, leg. P.D. 

Turner, 00-vi-1981 (IMI 261651, 261902). 

2. Phytophthora meadii McRae on/from Hevea 

brasiliensis, Tenasserim Division, 1979 (IMI 

240171-72, 240175-76, 240183-84). 

3. Phytophthora sp. on/from Hevea brasiliensis, 

Tenasserim Division, 1979 (IMI 240173-74, 

240177-82). 

9. Pucciniomycetes 

1. Phakopsora gossypii (Lagerh.) Hirats. (= 

Cerotelium gossypii, Kuehneola gossypii, Uredo 

gossypii) Burma, 0-00-1924 (IMI 67644), 

(Punithalingam 1968). Note: reported as 

Cerotelium desmium = Kuehneola desmium from 

cotton plant (Rhind & Seth 1945, Thaung 2005). 

2. Puccinia fragosoana Beltrán on/from Imperata 

cylindrica, Mandalay, leg. Maung Mya Thaung, 

1-vi-1972 [K{M}116387 on 21-vii-2003].

3. Ravenelia acaciae-concinnae Mundk. & Thirum. 

on Acacia concinna and ?Acacia sinuata (Cannon 

2008a). Note: named based on anamorph (II), and 

not on teleomorph (III). Cf. R. burmanica on 

Acacia concinna. 

4. Ravenelia sessilis Berk. on Albizia kalkora (? = 

Acacia kalkora G. Don), Albizia (Acacia) lebbeck, 

Albizia lucidior (= Albizia lucida), Albizia 

(Acacia) odoratissima, Albizia procera (Cannon 

2008b) and Gleditsia sinensis. 

10. Sordariomycetes 

1. Microascus trigonosporus var. trigonosporus 

C.W. Emmons & B.O. Dodge isolated from 

milled grain of Oryza sativa, Burma, leg. S. 

Udagawa, s.d. (IMI 86911-12). 

2. Trichoderma viride Pers. on/from Rhus 

paniculata, Burma, 00-xi-1987 (IMI 291088). 

11. Ustilaginomycetes 

1. Cintractia peribebuyensis (Speg.) Sawada on 

inflorescences of Cyperus spp. (Mordue 1995). 

Note: may be found on Fimbristylis spp., also. 

2. Sporisorium polytocae-digitatae Vánky as 

“Ustilago? on grass” on inflorescence of Polytoca 

digitata, Kwetnapha Village, near Mandalay, leg. 

Maung Mya Thaung, 1-xi-1972 (IMI 171326, 

holotype). 

12. Zygomycetes 

1. Basidiobolus sp. from Homo sapiens, Mandalay 

General Hospital, leg. R. Dev, 31-v-1963 (IMI 

103541). 

2. Syncephalastrum racemosum Cohn ex J. Schröt. 

on/from Oryza sativa, leg. D. Rhind, 00-i-1928 

(IMI 21180).

13. Incertae sedis [mitotic Ascomycete (Pezizomycotina) 

- Microthyriaceae/Pelasteraceace] 

1. Elachopeltis on/from Cinnamomum tamala, 

Karen State, leg. S.B. Tun, 15-v-1985 (IMI 

295813). Cf. E. cinnamomi Bat. & A.F. Vital on 

C. zeylanicum from Brazil. Note: these two host 

plant spp. often have same Burmese vernacular 

name depending upon localities in the country, 

but C. tamala is most likely to be the host in this 

case although the other cannot be ruled out 

entirely. Ostiolate, dimidiate, pycnidiostroma on 

leaves producing within hyaline, non-septate, 

mitospores with large vacuoles projecting illusion 

of septation. Holomorph = ?Aphanopeltis as in 

Elachopeltis phoebes Syd.
