This first version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> uses IUCN criteria version 3.1 for<br />

evaluating <strong>the</strong> species (no infraspecific taxa are included). The <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> is at <strong>the</strong> same time a new<br />

version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> checklist <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong>. Differences from <strong>the</strong> previous checklist<br />

published in <strong>the</strong> Catalogue <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> in 1999 are: 98 species are excluded<br />

(non-lichenized fungi, species not documented in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong>, misidentifications, doubtful/dubious<br />

records <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r errors) <strong>and</strong> nomenclatural changes are listed in <strong>the</strong> chapter on synonyms.<br />

In total, 1497 species <strong>of</strong> lichenized fungi (without lichenicolous <strong>and</strong> lichen-allied fungi) are<br />

included. Of <strong>the</strong>se, 120 (8%) suspicious records <strong>and</strong> taxonomically problematic or not well explored<br />

taxa were not evaluated against <strong>the</strong> IUCN criteria (NE category). In total, 560 species<br />

(37.4%) are threatened: 130 (8.7%) are critically endangered (CR), 184 (12.3%) are endangered<br />

(EN) <strong>and</strong> 246 (16.4%) are vulnerable (VU). In addition, 140 species (9.4%) are extinct in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong><br />

<strong>Republic</strong> (RE category), 174 species (11.6%) are listed in <strong>the</strong> category near threatened (NT) <strong>and</strong><br />

190 (12.7%) in least concern (LC). In total, 313 species (20.9%) are listed as data deficient (DD) because<br />

insufficient data are availabale for a categorization.<br />

Introduction<br />

The IUCN <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <strong>Red</strong> Data Books draw attention to species <strong>of</strong> prior interest in<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> conservation <strong>of</strong> threatened biodiversity. Precise categories <strong>and</strong> quantitative<br />

criteria for determining threat status were adopted in 1994, so <strong>the</strong> extinction risk can be<br />

evaluated at national <strong>and</strong> regional levels. The current version 3.1 was approved by <strong>the</strong> 51st<br />

meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IUCN Council in 2001 (IUCN 2001); fur<strong>the</strong>r specifications <strong>of</strong> how <strong>the</strong> categories<br />

should be applied were presented, e.g. by Gärdenfors (2001), Gärdenfors et al.<br />

(2001) <strong>and</strong> IUCN (2003, 2006).<br />

<strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> categories <strong>and</strong> criteria were conceived as means <strong>of</strong> evaluating extinction risk<br />

on a global scale. However, <strong>the</strong> criteria were re-specified <strong>and</strong> changed over time as did <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> categories, e.g. rarity as an individual risk factor <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> category missing species<br />

were rejected. Misinterpretation may also result from <strong>the</strong> use <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong> same letters (NT)<br />

for different categories: <strong>the</strong> present category “near threatened” versus <strong>the</strong> older one “not<br />

threatened”.

Numbers <strong>of</strong> categories <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir definitions are <strong>of</strong>ten changed also in regional <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s<br />

(country or its parts). A modified Central European concept is frequently used in pertinent<br />

countries, e.g. even in <strong>the</strong> new version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> <strong>of</strong> vascular plants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong><br />

(Holub & Procházka 2000), among lichen <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s in Wirth et al. (1996), Türk &<br />

Hafellner (1999), etc. In 1996, <strong>the</strong> categories <strong>and</strong> criteria at <strong>the</strong> regional level were modified<br />

in orded to facilitate <strong>the</strong>ir practical application (see Holub 1996). However, this modification<br />

<strong>of</strong> “national” scales resulted in chaos, especially in Europe. After <strong>the</strong> implementation <strong>of</strong> new<br />

principles for defining <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> criteria on a regional scale, o<strong>the</strong>r categories than those in <strong>the</strong><br />

current version 3.1 <strong>and</strong> different concepts should not be presented as IUCN <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s.<br />

Criteria for determining threat status were developed from those used for vertebrates<br />

(namely mammals <strong>and</strong> birds). For vascular plants <strong>and</strong> even more so for cryptogams o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

general (e.g., assessment <strong>of</strong> what constitutes an individuum) <strong>and</strong> special problems (insufficient<br />

knowledge on distribution, population size, dynamics, taxonomy, low number <strong>of</strong> specialists<br />

studying particular groups etc.) arise. Because <strong>the</strong> data necessary for determining <strong>the</strong><br />

threat category are missing, an objective classification is difficult or imposible. In such<br />

cases, comparison with o<strong>the</strong>r species <strong>of</strong> similar habitat <strong>and</strong> ecology for which <strong>the</strong>re are population<br />

data can be used. However, this involves some degree <strong>of</strong> subjectivity <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> authors plays an important role. A general discussion on <strong>the</strong> guidelines for<br />

applying <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> revised IUCN threat categories (version 2.3), with particular reference to<br />

bryophytes, was published by <strong>the</strong> European Committee for <strong>the</strong> Conservation <strong>of</strong> Bryophytes<br />

(Hallingbäck et al. 1998), <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> application <strong>of</strong> new categories <strong>and</strong> criteria have been tested<br />

on selected species <strong>of</strong> Swedish bryophytes (Hallingbäck 1998). Hodgetts (2002) presents<br />

a fur<strong>the</strong>r discussion <strong>of</strong> this topic at a general level.<br />

<strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong><br />

Lichens (lichenized fungi) are polyphyletic <strong>and</strong> involve various types <strong>of</strong> associations between<br />

fungi <strong>and</strong> algae/cyanobacteria. In some groups, it is difficult to say whe<strong>the</strong>r this is<br />

a loose association <strong>of</strong> free living organisms or a lichenized association, <strong>and</strong>, in some cases,<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r it is a lichen or not differs among specialists.<br />

In general, <strong>lichens</strong> have several specific characters, like o<strong>the</strong>r cryptogams. Many species<br />

can only be determined in a laboratory with <strong>the</strong> aid <strong>of</strong> microscope <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> identification<br />

<strong>of</strong> chemical substances (spot tests or more sophisticated methods such as TLC,<br />

HPTLC or HPLC). For several groups, a specialist must be consulted. Unlike vascular<br />

plants or macr<strong>of</strong>ungi, <strong>the</strong> contribution <strong>of</strong> amateurs to <strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong><br />

is limited. In addition, <strong>lichens</strong> are <strong>of</strong> low commercial importance <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir habitats<br />

are at a higher risk <strong>of</strong> disturbance <strong>and</strong> destruction. Many species depend on specific<br />

microhabitats/niches <strong>and</strong> microclimatic conditions, <strong>and</strong> even minor changes may cause<br />

a drastic decline in abundance or even local. In Nordic countries sensitive old-growth-forest<br />

lichen species serve as reliable indicators <strong>of</strong> forest continuity, <strong>the</strong> ecological quality <strong>of</strong><br />

forests <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> negative influence <strong>of</strong> improper forest management (Johansson &<br />

Gustafsson 2001). Most <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se species are endangered or extinct in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong>.<br />

For <strong>lichens</strong>, ano<strong>the</strong>r feature is significant – low growth rate <strong>and</strong> fast decline in abundance<br />

when environmental conditions change. In general, epiphytic <strong>lichens</strong> are more sensitive<br />

to changes in <strong>the</strong>ir environment than species growing on rocks or soil.The stability

<strong>and</strong> persistence <strong>of</strong> trees as substrates is limited <strong>and</strong> old trees are becoming rarer for various<br />

reasons. The decline <strong>of</strong> many lichen species was studied intensively from <strong>the</strong> 1960s onwards.<br />

Subsequently, <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong> were first compiled since <strong>the</strong> 1970s <strong>and</strong> are now<br />

available for many European countries; for some (e.g., Germany, Pol<strong>and</strong>, Austria,<br />

Slovakia) amended versions using <strong>the</strong> same or a new scale are also available. A European<br />

<strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> <strong>of</strong> macro<strong>lichens</strong> (Sérusiaux 1989) <strong>and</strong> a preliminary global <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> were also<br />

compiled (G. Thor, unpublished).<br />

Obviously, <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> compilations are dependent on <strong>the</strong> state <strong>of</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lichen<br />

flora. In some countries (e.g., Norway, Finl<strong>and</strong>), only macro<strong>lichens</strong> were included in earlier<br />

versions <strong>of</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s (Kuusinen et al. 1995, Tønsberg et al. 1996). In Switzerl<strong>and</strong>,<br />

only epiphytic <strong>and</strong> terricolous <strong>lichens</strong> are included (Scheidegger et al. 2002). Different<br />

categorizations <strong>and</strong> scales have been used in various countries, <strong>the</strong>refore a comparison between<br />

countries in <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> threatened species in different categories is difficult. The<br />

proportion <strong>of</strong> threatened species varies from relatively low in Norway (ca 19%, Timdal et<br />

al. 2006) to very high in Denmark (over 80%, Søchting & Alstrup 2002). Never<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>the</strong><br />

ratio usually ranges from one to two-thirds <strong>of</strong> a country’s flora, although large differences<br />

exist even on a regional scale (e.g., from 37 to 83% in federal states <strong>of</strong> Germany, see Wirth<br />

et al. 1996). In comparison to vascular plants, it seems that <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong> underestimate<br />

<strong>the</strong> proportion <strong>of</strong> threatened species, <strong>and</strong> a more precise evaluation results in increasing<br />

proportions <strong>of</strong> threatened <strong>lichens</strong>.<br />

Situation in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong><br />

Until recently, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> was subject to extremely heavy air pollution. The main<br />

source <strong>of</strong> sulphur dioxide, <strong>the</strong> most important pollutant, was <strong>the</strong> combustion <strong>of</strong> low quality<br />

coal in industry <strong>and</strong> power stations. Concentrations <strong>of</strong> sulphur dioxide substantially decreased<br />

after <strong>the</strong> 1990s, but concentrations <strong>of</strong> nitrogen compounds due to human activities<br />

are still increasing. Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Bohemia is <strong>the</strong> most affected part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> (<strong>and</strong><br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r with adjacent areas in Germany <strong>and</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most polluted regions in<br />

Europe). In addition, extensive changes in <strong>the</strong> natural environment have occurred throughout<br />

this country (changes in forest management, decrease in <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> old <strong>and</strong> solitary<br />

trees, intensification <strong>of</strong> agriculture, urbanisation etc.). Reports <strong>of</strong> changes in <strong>the</strong> lichen<br />

flora <strong>and</strong> species becoming extinct were first published more than 70 years ago (Anders<br />

1935). A slow recovery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> epiphytic lichen flora in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> is evident, especially<br />

in rural areas, however, this has not been documented.<br />

In contrast to surrounding countries <strong>the</strong>re is currently no <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> <strong>of</strong> threatened <strong>lichens</strong><br />

for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> (nei<strong>the</strong>r local nor regional) even though a considerable number <strong>of</strong><br />

species are threatened. In 1995, <strong>the</strong> fourth volume <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> Data Book <strong>of</strong> threatened animals<br />

<strong>and</strong> plants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>and</strong> Slovak <strong>Republic</strong>s, which included cyanobacteria, algae,<br />

fungi, <strong>lichens</strong> <strong>and</strong> bryophytes, was published (Liška & Pišút 1995). The chapter dealing<br />

with <strong>lichens</strong> includes 50 species, not <strong>the</strong> most threatened, but those indicating <strong>the</strong> complexity<br />

<strong>of</strong> threat in terms <strong>of</strong> ecology, distribution patterns <strong>and</strong> susceptibility to various<br />

stress factors. <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> threatened species in <strong>the</strong> national flora was <strong>the</strong> main topic <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> conference <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> Botanical Society in 1995, <strong>and</strong> information on <strong>lichens</strong> was<br />

presented: general problems, present knowledge, comparison within European countries

<strong>and</strong> a rough estimate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> proportion <strong>of</strong> categories <strong>of</strong> threat to our lichen flora (Liška<br />

1996). At that time it was estimated that 55% <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> species were threatened. The total<br />

number <strong>of</strong> lichen species was estimated as 1400 (Liška 1996), but due to newly recorded<br />

species is now almost 1500 (Vězda & Liška 1999, Liška 2005 <strong>and</strong> references in Appendix 1).<br />

The IUCN recommended <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> as a part <strong>of</strong> a revised checklist,<br />

<strong>the</strong>refore <strong>the</strong> complete flora was evaluated <strong>and</strong> a checklist produced.<br />

Application <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IUCN criteria version 3.1<br />

The compilation <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> was complicated <strong>and</strong> time consuming because no preliminary<br />

or local/regional lists existed. We tried to collect new data during field surveys, verify<br />

old localities <strong>and</strong> check specimens in herbaria, but at <strong>the</strong> moment only a part <strong>of</strong> this task<br />

is complete. At present our knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lichen flora is poorer than that <strong>of</strong> e.g.,<br />

bryophytes, as illustrated by <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> newly recorded species (see Palice 1999, Liška<br />

2005, Vondrák et al. 2007 for <strong>lichens</strong>, Soldán 1994, Váňa 1995 for bryophytes). In spite <strong>of</strong><br />

this <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> sometimes poorly founded categorization, it is useful <strong>and</strong> adviseable to compile<br />

a <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>; arguments based on <strong>the</strong> example <strong>of</strong> bryophytes are discussed by Váňa (1995).<br />

Some general terms used in <strong>the</strong> IUCN categorization raise problems when applied to <strong>lichens</strong>:<br />

(i) Individual: this is difficult to define for cryptogams in general; moreover, <strong>lichens</strong> are<br />

very variable with regard to growth form. Minor problems are encountered when<br />

individualing fruticose or foliose <strong>lichens</strong>. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong> forming dense carpets or<br />

pendulous fruticose thalli an approximation <strong>of</strong> an individual is a mat or cluster. Most problematic<br />

are crustose thalli forming mosaics, in which individual thalli can grow toge<strong>the</strong>r or<br />

be intermixed.<br />

(ii) Generation: <strong>the</strong>re is a wide range <strong>of</strong> growth rates <strong>and</strong> estimated ages <strong>of</strong> lichen thalli,<br />

Even for <strong>the</strong> same species growth rates may differ by a factor <strong>of</strong> ten or more, depending on<br />

altitude <strong>and</strong> region; annual rates may range from hundreds to tens <strong>of</strong> millimetres.There are<br />

also big differences in life span <strong>and</strong> generative reproduction <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong>: some live only<br />

a few months (ephemeral <strong>lichens</strong>), o<strong>the</strong>rs for more than a thous<strong>and</strong> years (e.g.,<br />

Rhizocarpon spp.). Moreover, some <strong>lichens</strong> produce nei<strong>the</strong>r fruit-bodies with spores nor<br />

vegetative diaspores. For practical purposes, a generation may be estimated to span approximately<br />

10–30 years.<br />

(iii) Locality: <strong>the</strong> area <strong>of</strong> a locality differs greatly for different lichen species (e.g., hectares<br />

or square kilometers in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> some terricolous or saxicolous <strong>lichens</strong> vs. an individual<br />

tree for rare epiphytes).<br />

A compilation <strong>of</strong> a <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> for a country is difficult because <strong>of</strong> insufficient taxonomic<br />

data on species-rich genera <strong>of</strong> crustose (e.g., Lecanora, Lecidea, Verrucaria) <strong>and</strong> fruticose<br />

<strong>lichens</strong> (e.g., Usnea), <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> chorology <strong>and</strong> ecology <strong>of</strong> many lichen taxa (see e.g., <strong>the</strong> discussion<br />

on criteria <strong>and</strong> parameters in Scheidegger & Goward 2002). This is particularly<br />

<strong>the</strong> case for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong>, because <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> flora was unknown until <strong>the</strong><br />

publication <strong>of</strong> a Catalogue (Vězda & Liška 1999). This Catalogue provides a list <strong>of</strong> species<br />

reported from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong>. Although some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> data were critically evaluated,<br />

many old records are dubious <strong>and</strong> need to be revised. In addition, knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> present<br />

distribution <strong>of</strong> most <strong>lichens</strong> is still poor. Several corrections <strong>and</strong> additions to <strong>the</strong> Catalogue

were published recently (Liška 2005), but some data still need a revision. At first we intended<br />

to minimize <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> problematic records, but it soon became evident that this<br />

was not feasible because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> extent <strong>and</strong> variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problems. Many problematic taxa<br />

concern <strong>the</strong> family Verrucariaceae. Many species described by M. Servít are known only<br />

for one or few localities. It is evident that Servít’s concept <strong>of</strong> genera <strong>and</strong> species in this<br />

family does not correspond with current taxonomical concepts. However, a modern study<br />

is still not available <strong>and</strong> many species are believed to be dubious. Therefore suspicious records<br />

<strong>and</strong> poorly studied species with unclear taxonomy are not evaluated using <strong>the</strong> IUCN<br />

criteria <strong>and</strong> included in <strong>the</strong> category NE (not evaluated), despite <strong>the</strong> availability <strong>of</strong> method<br />

to solve such problems (Váňa 2002). It is our opinion that drawing attention to <strong>the</strong>se taxa is<br />

important <strong>and</strong> may stimulate such a revision. Some taxa treated as synonyms in <strong>the</strong> Catalogue<br />

(Vězda & Liška 1999) have been reevaluated on <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> recent check-lists<br />

(Coppins 2002, Nimis & Martellos 2003, Santesson et al. 2004) <strong>and</strong> modern taxonomic<br />

<strong>and</strong> molecular phylogenetic studies. They are now included in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>. The differences<br />

between <strong>the</strong> Catalogue <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> are listed by cross-references in separate<br />

chapters (see Excluded species <strong>and</strong> Synonyms).<br />

Because <strong>of</strong> our limited knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> lichen flora, it was not possible to apply<br />

all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IUCN criteria when compiling <strong>the</strong> this first version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>, in particular<br />

<strong>the</strong> category RE (regionally extinct species). As discussed above, refinding a species cannot<br />

be completely excluded (except in special cases like <strong>the</strong> destruction <strong>of</strong> an original locality).<br />

The same problem is faced by authors in many countries. In <strong>the</strong> last version <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bryophytes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> bryologists introduced a new subcategory<br />

within <strong>the</strong> category DD, called DD-vanished (Kučera & Váňa 2003, 2005). For <strong>lichens</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> our flora is poorer than for bryophytes. Therefore, we included <strong>lichens</strong><br />

not reported for more than 50 years in <strong>the</strong> category RE, even if <strong>the</strong>ir localities were<br />

not reinvestigated, which corresponds to <strong>the</strong> old category <strong>of</strong> missing species. Full application<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> IUCN criteria to <strong>the</strong> category RE is not possible for cryptogams (Váňa 1995).<br />

However, this category very <strong>of</strong>ten includes species sensitive to environmental changes <strong>and</strong><br />

are extinct or critically endangered in o<strong>the</strong>r countries. Never<strong>the</strong>less, refinding such species<br />

in <strong>the</strong> future cannot be excluded <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>ir status may be reevaluated. In our opinion<br />

including <strong>the</strong>se species in <strong>the</strong> category RE is a minor mistake compared to including <strong>the</strong>m<br />

in o<strong>the</strong>r categories (some exceptions concern saxicolous <strong>lichens</strong>, which are less sensitive<br />

than epiphytes <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore classified as CR). Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, a more rigorous categorization<br />

may focus investigations in <strong>the</strong> future.<br />

The category CR (critically endangered) includes species in immediate threat <strong>of</strong> extinction<br />

<strong>and</strong> those growing in one or few localities. Species declining in abundance, mainly<br />

epiphytes susceptible to environmental changes <strong>and</strong> probably with limited survival potential<br />

at <strong>the</strong>ir last localities, are highly represented in this category. In addition, very rare<br />

saxicolous/terricolous species that occur in relict habitats are also included. Cladonia<br />

stellaris has a relatively higher number <strong>of</strong> localities than o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>lichens</strong> in this category because<br />

<strong>of</strong> its attractive appearance <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> higher risk posed by <strong>the</strong> threat <strong>of</strong> picking.<br />

The category EN (endangered) includes <strong>lichens</strong> declining in abundance that are sensitive<br />

to environmental changes. The incidence <strong>of</strong> a decline is mostly estimated (as in <strong>the</strong><br />

category VU, vulnerable) because quantitative data are not available in most cases. The<br />

category VU includes a fairly high proportion <strong>of</strong> terricolous/saxicolous species, which occur<br />

in natural habitats (<strong>of</strong>ten limestone areas) <strong>and</strong> avoid anthropogenous substrates.

Although <strong>the</strong>se <strong>lichens</strong> may be locally frequent, <strong>the</strong> loss <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir habitats is continual <strong>and</strong><br />

evident, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir potential for dispersal is very limited. Species declining in abundance<br />

that occur also on human-made substrates are mostly included in <strong>the</strong> NT category.<br />

During a preparatory stage in <strong>the</strong> compilation <strong>of</strong> this <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>, changes in <strong>the</strong> distribution<br />

<strong>of</strong> certain species were studied in detail (Liška 1994, Liška et al. 1996, 1998a, b, 2006,<br />

Liška & Pišút 1990). For this study, threatened as well as rare <strong>lichens</strong> <strong>of</strong> various distributions<br />

in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> <strong>and</strong> degree <strong>of</strong> sensitivity <strong>and</strong> frequency, were selected. These<br />

species were compared with o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>lichens</strong>, with similar distributions, sensitivities <strong>and</strong> potential<br />

threat <strong>of</strong> habitat change. These studies documented a notable decrease in sensitive<br />

species <strong>and</strong> significant changes in <strong>the</strong> distribution <strong>of</strong> <strong>lichens</strong> not regarded as endangered<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>refore not red-listed before (e.g., Peltigera horizontalis <strong>and</strong> P. polydactylon). Detailed<br />

surveys <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> distribution changes are published for only 36 <strong>lichens</strong>, but we were<br />

able to use our experience <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>se results to evaluate o<strong>the</strong>r species.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> IUCN criteria, criterion A (observed, estimated or suspected reduction in <strong>the</strong><br />

number <strong>of</strong> individuals) is currently impractical since <strong>the</strong>re is no information on population<br />

size at a particular locality. Therefore, indirect estimates were obtained for readily identifiable<br />

<strong>lichens</strong> with well documented past distribution. The decline was inferred from <strong>the</strong> reduction<br />

in <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> localities ra<strong>the</strong>r than individuals. This criterion is especially useful<br />

for taxa strongly associated with endangered habitats (old-growth forests, subalpine<br />

vegetation, peat-bogs, limestone outcrops) <strong>and</strong> used mainly in cases where <strong>the</strong> <strong>lichens</strong><br />

have been mapped in detail (Liška 1994, Liška & Pišút 1990, Liška et al. 1996, 1998a, b,<br />

2006). Criterion B (small geographic range <strong>and</strong> fragmented area <strong>of</strong> occupancy, continuing<br />

decline or extreme fluctuations in extent <strong>of</strong> occurrence, area <strong>of</strong> occupancy, number <strong>of</strong> locations<br />

or subpopulations or number <strong>of</strong> mature individuals) <strong>and</strong> criterion C (population<br />

size <strong>and</strong> continuing decline) are used for <strong>lichens</strong> with a specific ecology (e.g., cupro/ferrophilous,<br />

serpentinicolous <strong>and</strong> lichenicolous <strong>lichens</strong>) <strong>and</strong> species on <strong>the</strong> edge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir distribution<br />

area. Criterion D (small population size) is <strong>the</strong> main criterion <strong>of</strong> species that have<br />

very restricted distribution – last relict occurrences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> boreal-/arctic-montane species<br />

(e.g., Arctoparmelia centrifuga <strong>and</strong> Leptogium rivale), or rare species confined to specific<br />

habitats at one or a few localities, such as diabase <strong>and</strong> xero<strong>the</strong>rmic serpentine rocks (e.g.,<br />

Peccania cernohorskyi <strong>and</strong> Lichinella stipatula). In previous <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s <strong>the</strong>se taxa were<br />

classified in category R (rare species). For o<strong>the</strong>r, mainly epiphytic species this criterion<br />

was used along with criteria A <strong>and</strong>/or C, e.g., in cases where <strong>the</strong> species are conspicuous<br />

but previously rarely recorded (e.g., Heterodermia speciosa <strong>and</strong> Lobaria amplissima).<br />

These taxa were placed in category CR. Criterion E (probability <strong>of</strong> extinction) is not applicable,<br />

because data for such an analysis are not available; extrapolation is possible only for<br />

epiphytic <strong>lichens</strong> where survival is dependent on <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> a specific substrate (particular<br />

tree) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y are unable to colonize new substrates.<br />

Strict application <strong>of</strong> category definitions would result in a high proportion <strong>of</strong> species in<br />

category DD. Including such taxa in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong> would not increase its information value.<br />

Therefore, species were categorized even when <strong>the</strong> data were incomplete, by a comparison<br />

with better documented species. In addition, we tried to resolve <strong>the</strong> problems concerning<br />

<strong>the</strong> gaps in our knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>and</strong> changes in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> lichen flora by having discussions<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r lichenologists. Never<strong>the</strong>less, changes in distribution have not been evaluated<br />

for some species with poor data, or where <strong>the</strong>re are uncertainties about <strong>the</strong> reliability <strong>of</strong> old<br />

records, <strong>and</strong> such species were included in <strong>the</strong> category DD (data deficient). Lichens for

which <strong>the</strong>re are no data on <strong>the</strong>ir present occurrence, even though <strong>the</strong> probability <strong>of</strong> finding<br />

<strong>the</strong>m is high (e.g., less sensitive saxicolous micro<strong>lichens</strong>), were also placed in this category<br />

along with those that are presumably overlooked, difficult to identify or recently discovered,<br />

as change in <strong>the</strong>ir distribution is difficult to evaluate. Including <strong>the</strong>se species in<br />

<strong>the</strong> category DD (data deficient) is better than a more fuzzy evaluation based on subjective<br />

speculations. Although this is a relatively frequently used category, one purpose <strong>of</strong> <strong>Red</strong><br />

<strong>List</strong>s is to draw attention to uncertain or missing data <strong>and</strong> focus attention on <strong>the</strong>se species.<br />

In total, 1577 species were evaluated, i.e. all taxa included in <strong>the</strong> Catalogue (Vězda &<br />

Liška 1999) plus additional published records (see list <strong>of</strong> publications in Liška 2005 <strong>and</strong> in<br />

Appendix 1) <strong>and</strong> reevaluated taxa (earlier treated as synonyms). The present checklist includes<br />

1497 <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lichenized species in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> flora, exluding lichenicolous fungi; <strong>the</strong><br />

checklist <strong>of</strong> lichenicolous fungi published by Kocourková (2000) includes 156 species.<br />

Discussion<br />

Based on a detailed evaluation, 98 species were excluded for various reasons (non-lichenized<br />

fungus, not recorded in <strong>the</strong> country, misidentification <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r errors) from <strong>the</strong> previous list<br />

<strong>of</strong> species published for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Czech</strong> <strong>Republic</strong> (Vězda & Liška 1999). Never<strong>the</strong>less, doubts<br />

persist for certain taxa, which need fur<strong>the</strong>r study in herbaria or are problematic taxonomically.<br />

These species were not evaluated according to IUCN criteria <strong>and</strong> are in <strong>the</strong> category<br />

NE (120 species in total, 8%). Species for which <strong>the</strong>re are insufficient data for a categorization<br />

are treated as data deficient (DD – 313 species, 20.9%). The category <strong>of</strong> regionally extinct<br />

species includes 140 <strong>lichens</strong> (9.4%). In total 560 species (37.4%) are threatened (see<br />

Table 1). A comparison with neighbouring countries is difficult, because different concepts<br />

are used <strong>the</strong>re. In Germany <strong>and</strong> Austria (Wirth et al. 1996, Türk & Hafellner 1999), a different<br />

scale <strong>and</strong> categorization are used, because <strong>the</strong> first <strong>Red</strong> <strong>List</strong>s for <strong>the</strong>se countries were<br />

published prior to <strong>the</strong> publication <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> newly defined IUCN categories. However, comparison<br />

is difficult even with countries in which <strong>the</strong> new IUCN categories (version 3.1, IUCN<br />

2001) are used, such as Slovakia (Pišút et al. 2001) <strong>and</strong> Pol<strong>and</strong> (Cieśliński et al. 2003), because<br />

red listed species form only a part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lichen flora.<br />

Souhrn<br />

Předkládaný červený seznam představuje první verzi zhodnocení míry ohrožení lišejníkové flóry ČR. Použitá kategorizace<br />

je podle nových kritérií IUCN (verze 3.1). Červený seznam je publikován jako součást aktualizovaného<br />

kompletního seznamu druhů lišejníků ČR a slouží tedy zároveň jako checklist s vyznačenými změnami oproti<br />

předchozímu soupisu (Katalog lišejníků ČR, Vězda & Liška 1999). Seznam zahrnuje pouze kategorii druhu a infraspecifické<br />

taxony nejsou samostatně pojednány. Celkový počet zahrnutých druhů je 1497 lišejníků (lichenizovaných<br />

hub bez hub lichenikolních). Ve srovnání s dříve publikovaným Katalogem bylo 98 druhů vyloučeno (nelichenizované<br />

houby, nedoložený výskyt, chybná determinace a jiné omyly). Nehodnoceny byly taxony, u jejichž<br />

výskytu jsou pochybnosti, taxony málo známé a taxonomicky nejasné (kategorie NE) – celkem 120 druhů (8%<br />

z celkového počtu lišejníků). Celkem ohrožených druhů je 560 (37.4%), z toho kriticky ohrožených (kategorie<br />

CR) je 130 (8.7%), ohrožených (EN) je 184 (12.3%) a zranitelných (VU) je 246 (16.4%). Mimo to 140 druhů<br />

(9.4%) bylo zařazeno do kategorie vyhynulých (RE). Taxonů blízkých ohrožení (NT) je celkem 174 druhů<br />

(11.6%). Neohrožených taxonů (LC) je 190 (12.7%). Taxonů s nedostatečně známými údaji pro kategorizaci<br />

(DD) je 313 (20.9%). Nomenklatorické změny oproti Katalogu jsou uvedeny samostatně v soupisu synonym.<br />
