Theft
(Continued from pg 1)
breaking into a Monroe
County home and taking a
safe and $13,000 in cash
and other property items.
Charged by the detective
division of the Monroe
County Sheriff’s
Department each with aggravated
burglary and
theft over $10,000 were
Derrick Evans, 30, and
Jason A. Johnson, 36, both
of Riceville Road, Athens.
The two men have
been charged but on
Thursday were held in
custody in the McMinn
County Justice Center in
Athens, where a “hold” for
Monroe County had been
placed.
According to the local
detectives, a resident of
Pleasant Drive in Madisonville
reported a break-in
to his home on July 15,
2012. The resident told investigators
that someone
took a safe that contained
$13,000 cash, jewelry,
coins, and other items of
property.
Taken at the same time
from the home were two
handguns and two chainsaws.
The detective division
said its investigation determined
that Evans and
Johnson entered the residence
and removed the
safe, the weapons, and the
chainsaws.
One person was in custody
apparent non-life threatening
The Food and Drug
Administration said on
Thursday the makers of
Ambien and other sleeping
pills will be required to
lower the dosage of their
drugs as studies have
shown patients were at a
higher risk of injury due to
morning drowsiness. The
agency said new research
showed the drugs remained
in the bloodstream
at levels high
enough to interfere with
morning driving.
The nation’s flu epidemic
continued on
Thursday to worsen as
Boston declared a public
health emergency with
over 700 cases of the flu
since October, a ten-fold
jump over last year. Nationally,
the flu has spread
into more than 80 percent
of the U.S., where over
2,200 persons have been
hospitalized and 18 children
have died, according
to data from the Centers
for Disease Control and
Prevention.
Meanwhile, researchers
at the National Academy
of Sciences said that
Americans were “far
more” unhealthier than
persons in 16 other developed
countries, primarily
because of obesity and
heart disease, even in
younger persons. The U.S.
was worse than Canada,
Australia, Britain, France,
Germany, Portugal, Italy,
and others in its infant
mortality rate, AIDS, drug
abuse, diabetes, heart and
lung problems, and disabilities.
At the same time, NBC
News said on Thursday
that sitting, like tobacco, is
dangerous for one’s health,
as Americans are sitting
these days now more than
ever. Mayo Clinic obesity
expert Dr. James Levine
told the network that even
daily exercise would not
undo the damage caused
by hours of sitting,
whether one is overweight
or marathon runner-slim.
In sports, for the first
time since 1996, the Baseball
Writers Association of
America on Wednesday
elected no one to the
Baseball Hall of Fame,
snubbing homerun king
Barry Bonds and seventime
Cy Young Awardwinning
pitcher Roger
Clemons. Both men
ended their careers with
suspicions of using per-
Which one will go
its new Monopoly token?
On Wednesday, the toymaker
announced a Facebook
contest to eliminate
one of the eight tokens
and introduce a new one,
including perhaps a cat, a
guitar, a toy robot, a diamond
ring, and even a helicopter.
(Monopoly’s
tokens have changed over
the years: the original version
included a lantern, a
purse, a cannon, and a
Vonore
(Continued from pg 1)
2012.
Mayor Summey requested
that a few amendments
be made to these
minutes. Some language
relating to the recent voting
ordinance (in which
Vonore’s voting date
would now coincide with
the general elections held
in November) had been
left out, and Mayor Summey
asked that the
amended minutes contain
the reasoning behind the
decision. He also asked for
the minutes to note that a
copy of the tape of this
December meeting would
be in the files alongside
the amended minutes.
With these amendments
in mind, Alderman
Evans made a motion to
accept the minutes. Seconding
the motion was Alderman
Brown, and it
passed with all ayes.
Shirley Brown took to
the floor next, with a report
from the library and
museum. The library report
covered the first half
of the year. The figures
were good, she was
pleased to say. The current
circulation of the library
was 8,813, a huge increase
from a mere year ago.
Computer use was 2,183,
while the library had 101
new patrons. Museumwise,
Ms. Brown reported
the board is preparing to
send out a letter to veterans,
regarding the plagues
going up at the Veterans
Memorial.
Following Ms. Brown’s
report, both Mayor Summey
and Alderman Evans
told her they were pleased
to have her back.
“I’m glad to be back,”
she said. “Thanks [to
everyone] for standing by
me.”
The city board then
moved on to reports from
the individual departments.
Alderman Garren
was absent, so there was
no official report from the
Public Works Department.
However, Mayor
Summey did have a few
bits of news. He informed
those gathered that the
department was continuing
to check into a few
troublesome manholes,
and have found a company
that can spray-line them
(as has been done in
Madisonville) to prevent
future leaks. The Public
Works Department has
also worked on several
pumping stations
throughout the city.
Mayor Summey expected
everyone would now see a
big difference on how
water moves through the
sewer system.
Alderman Brown followed
with a report for
the Vonore Fire Department.
During the month
of December 2012, the fire
department answered the
following calls: 11 first responses,
five false alarms,
one vehicle wreck, one
house fire, and one Life
Star landing. In total, the
fire department answered
19 calls. Alderman Brown
also reported the department’s
lighter truck now
boasts some new tires.
Alderman Evans, with
the Parks and Recreation
Department, had little to
report on Tuesday night.
The next Parks and Recreation
Board meeting will
be held at the first of February,
he said. They are
looking into getting everything
organized for the
grant the department has
its eye on.
The final report came
from Alderman Hammontree,
who updated the
board on the recent goings-on
of the Vonore Police
Department.
Everything is going well,
said Hammontree. However,
the department did
have a busy month of December.
Chief Kirkland
and Officer Miller took
out a meth lab, arresting
the man responsible in the
process. The department
also worked more wrecks
than usual. Finally, reported
Alderman Hammontree,
all the officers
recently traveled to every
school in the county. This
way, the officers now
know where each one is
located, in case they need
to respond to an emergency.
There were no grievances
to come before the
board, so Mayor Summey
took a few moments to
make a comment or two.
He reported he had been
quite busy the past few
days, especially when it
came to finding folks to
donate funds for the Veterans
Memorial. Several
have offered up their support,
including Volunteer
Federal who has committed
a great deal. Mayor
Summey was also pleased
to say the Food City construction
was coming
along extremely well.
There was only one
order of Old Business to
come before the board on
Tuesday night. This was
the second reading of an
ordinance to change the
city’s election date, so the
new one coincides with
the general elections held
in November. Not only
will this change save the
city of Vonore money, it
may also encourage more
voter turn-out in the future.
Alderman Evans
made a motion to pass the
ordinance on its second
reading. Alderman Brown
seconded the motion. The
measure passed with all in
favor.
There was no New
Business, but Mayor Summey
did ask that the board
January 11, 2013
re-affirm a commitment it
had made not so long ago.
It was this: that the
agenda for the monthly
meeting will be set in
stone at the monthly
workshop, i.e. the first
Tuesday of each month.
With no more to discuss,
Alderman Hammontree
made a motion to
adjourn for the evening.
Alderman Brown seconded
the motion, and
the meeting ended at 7:26
p.m.

Rejuvenates skin
tone and texture.
the few types of cancer
that is considered to be
preventable.
The question remains
though, for if it is preventable,
then what causes it
to arise in the first place?
For a few women, the
reason cervical cancer develops
is related to genetics;
but for the majority of
women, the most common
reason is a virus
called the Human Papilloma
Virus, or HPV.
HPV is a disease that is
transmitted by genital
contact with someone
who is already infected
with the virus. Infection
with HPV is extremely
common, affecting an es-
423-337-7933
510 S Main Street Sweetwater
timated 75 to 80 percent
of men and women over
their lifetime, and it is
often considered the most
common sexually transmitted
disease.
The virus is usually
cleared by the person's immune
system without any
signs or symptoms,
though sometimes the
person's immune response
is not sufficient, which can
lead to repeat infection. If
the virus is the high-risk
type, the persistent infection
has the potential to
develop into pre-cancerous
cells or any stage of
cervical cancer.
There are many different
strains of HPV, which
can affect both males and
females. Some strains can
cause genital warts in both
sexes, while other strains
have the potential to cause
cervical cancer. The strains
that lead to cervical cancer
are often undetected due
to a lack of physical signs
or symptoms. In addition
to the fact that currently
there is no way to test
males for HPV, the female
has to take an additional
step in order to help prevent
the development of
cervical cancer within herself.
One of the most important
ways a woman can
help prevent the development
of cervical cancer is
to have a simple test called
a cervical cancer screening,
which is more commonly
known as a “pap
smear.” This test can detect
precancerous cells on
the cervix before they develop
into cancer. Currently,
it is not
recommended that fe-
males under the age of 21
have a pap smear; however,
regular wellness visits
in this age group will help
to establish lifelong
healthy habits.
For women between
the ages of 21 and 64, it is
recommended that they
have a pap smear once
every three years, as long
as previous results are normal.
Those women who
have had a hysterectomy
are not required to have a
pap smear, as long as the
reason for the hysterectomy
was not cancer related.
This does not mean
that a woman, who has
had a hysterectomy,
should not follow up with
her provider on a regular
basis, because even though
no pap smear will need to
be done, she will still require
regular well woman
exams.
Women over the age of
65 do not require further
testing, as long as their
prior screenings have been
adequate and they are not
otherwise at risk of developing
cervical cancer.
In addition to a pap
smear, another important
part of prevention is vaccination.
Women, as well
as men, are encouraged to
get a vaccination as a way
of not only protecting
themselves, but also their
future partners, from contracting
HPV. The Gardasil
vaccine is the only
HPV vaccine that helps
protect both males and females
from the four main
strains of HPV that cause
most of the problems.
Two of the strains cause
about 75 percent of cervical
cancer and the other
two cause about 90 percent
of genital warts. The
vaccine also helps protect
against about 70 percent
of vaginal cancer and
around 50 percent of vulvar
cancer.
It is recommended that
males and females between
the ages of nine and
26 get the vaccine, which
consists of a series of three
shots over a period of six
months. While the vaccine
is very helpful for prevention,
it may not
completely protect everyone
and it does not protect
against any other type
of diseases, and it does not
treat genital warts or cancer.
Therefore, it is very
important for women to
continue to have routine
pap smears even after vaccination.
423-253-4042
Reagan Valley Road for a
court hearing appearance
on Tuesday, January 15.
According to Coffman’s
arrest warrant, sworn to by
the Monroe County Sheriff’s
detective division, a
witness said that two days
after John Wayne Coffman’s
death from an overdose
of pain medication,
Karen Coffman stated she
killed her husband by administering
the overdose.
The division’s detectives
said the witness
heard Coffman make
more than one statement
regarding the killing of the
victim and had indicated
that she would use an
overdose as a mechanism
of death.
John Wayne Coffman
died on December 3, 2012,
and the witness spoke
with detectives on
Wednesday, January 9,
2013.
The death of Coffman
came at his home on
Thompson Farm Road,
sheriff’s deputies reported.
Karen Coffman
said she awakened around
2:45 p.m. and found John
Coffman in a recliner. He
was not breathing, she
said.
Deputy Michael
Cansler said Coffman had
a feeding tube inserted
into his stomach and
when found also had a red
liquid around the tube on
his stomach region. An
empty bottle of hydrocodone
turned up between
John Coffman’s
right arm and right leg. An
empty bottle of liquid hydrocodone
was located on
the floor near the recliner.
The detective division
said its investigation corroborated
the witness’ information
regarding the
mechanism of death and
prior planning by Karen
Coffman.
“She could make me laugh
will be missed by a lot
of people.”
According to a report
filed by Monroe County
Sheriff’s Deputy Chase
Nipper, a neighbor identified
as Perry Philpott,
spotted smoke coming
from Dailey’s Church
Road home. He hurried
to the residence and found
Rooster standing in the
doorway of her burning
house and wrapping her in
his jacket carried her to his
vehicle, where he called
dialed 911.
Nipper said he arrived
around 12:30 p.m., finding
the home fully engulfed in
flames. Several men were
fighting the fire with
water buckets and they directed
Nipper to
Philpott’s truck, where he
found Dailey with burns
to her arms, chest, head,
and to the right side of her
body.
Nipper said Dailey
communicated with him,
giving him her name and
age. An ambulance with
Monroe County EMS arrived
and began to treat
Dailey’s burns.
Investigators on the fire
the cause or the origin of
the fire. Nipper said paramedics
treated and then
transported Dailey to
McGee-Tyson Airport in
The Beat Goes On...
As Reported to the Officers
Monroe County Sheriff’s
Captain John Acuff
said he investigated a reported
wallet theft from a
Head of the Creek Road
wallet owner on New
Years Day. The wallet held
$162, a driver’s license, and
a social security card, its
owner said.
Sheriff’s Deputy
Michael Cansler said he
responded to a call from
Happy Hollow Road resident
on January 1, when
thieves entered a barn and
took five garbage bags full
of aluminum cans valued
at $25.
Sheriff’s Deputy
Franklin Steele said he
filed a report on January 2
regarding the theft of a
1996 Honda CBR 600
motorcycle from an Old
Mine Road home. Three
hours later, the cycle’s
owner called and said he
found his bike just down
the road in some bushes.
Sweetwater Police Patrol
Officer Daniel Johnson
said he was dispatched
on January 2 to Sweetwater-Vonore
Road, where a
property owner reported
the theft of a toolbox and
a lawn mower, both valued
at $1,500.
Deputy Cansler said he
met with a Tellico Plains
man on January 4 and filed
GRAND JURY NOTICE
“It is the duty of the Grand Jurors to investigate
any public offense which they know or have reason
to believe has been committed and which is
triable or indictable in this court. Any person having
knowledge of proof that such an offense has
been committed may apply to testify before the
grand jury subject to the provisions of Tennessee
Code Annotated, section 40-12-104. The foreman
in this county is Faye Tennyson, who resides at
705 Broad Street, Sweetwater, Tennessee.
The Grand Jury will be meeting in the courthouse
in Madisonville on Wednesday, February
6, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.
You may be prosecuted for perjury for any oral
or written statement which you make under oath
to the grand jury when you know the statement to
be false and when the statement touches on a
matter material to the point in question.”
a report on a vandalized
vehicle and a burglary of it,
a breach that led to a missing
$80 dog pack, a pair of
hiking boots that cost
$275, and $50 in stolen
food.
Sheriff’s Deputy
Christopher Francis said
he investigated a burglary
that took place on January
5 on Anderson Road,
where $400 worth of Wii
consoles and controllers
turned up missing.
On January 5, Sheriff’s
Deputy Clint Brookshire
said he spoke with a
Madisonville resident who
allowed a female to sleep
over at his home and when
he awoke the next day, the
female was gone and so
was $200 from his billfold.
Sheriff’s Deputy Chase
Nipper said he arrived at a
Presley Road home on
January 5, learning of a
theft of two marine batteries
from a 2003 Triton
TR-22 boat. The lost batteries
were worth $150, the
boat owner said.
Deputy Francis was
back on January 6, saying
he was dispatched to a
house on Billingsley Road,
where a break-in resulted
in the theft of $100 worth
of jewelry and $120 cash.
Sheriff’s Captain Bill
Johnson said he took a report
of stolen wheels and
tires from a Madisonville
man on January 7, the
value of the 16 items coming
to $2,000.
Sheriff’s Deputy John
A series of bombings in
different parts of Pakistan
killed 103 persons on
Thursday, including 69
who died in a sectarian attack
on a billiard parlor in
the southwest city of
Quetta. Officials said the
blasts were the deadliest in
recent years in the country
and investigators said the
explosions were either the
work of the Taliban or
Baluch militants.
Think tank Heritage
Foundation said on Thursday
the Asia-Pacific region
was the home of the
world’s freest economies,
where governments are
least involved in trade and
labor markets and excessive
spending. Hong
Kong, Singapore, Australia,
and New Zealand
took the four top spots,
followed by Switzerland,
Canada, Chile, Mauritius,
and Denmark. The U.S.
was tenth.
In the grip of a cold
wave in recent days, the
Holy Land got its worst
snowstorm in 20 years on
Thursday as stormy
weather moved in and
dumped up to a foot of
snow across parts of the
Mideast, snarling traffic
from Egypt to Israel,
Lebanon, Jordan, and
Turkey. At least eight persons
died in the region, according
to the Red Cross.
The mayor of a small
village in Quebec said on
Thursday that 11 killer
whales, which were locked
in by ice in a Canadian bay,
swam to freedom on
Wednesday, when a
change in current opened
a path to open water.
Petah Inukpuk said villagers
believed the new
moon activated the current
and created a narrow
channel that stretched 25
miles out into ice-free
water of Hudson Bay.
According to Europe’s
Jet Airliner Crash Data
Evaluation Centre on
Thursday, the world’s
safest airline is not one
Around The Globe
from the United States.
Rather, it is Finnair, which
has not lost an aircraft or
experienced a fatality in
the past 30 years. The carrier
topped second place
Air New Zealand, third
place Cathay Pacific, and
fourth place Emirates.
Among the worst: Sky-
West, Turkish Airlines,
Korean Air, Air India, and
China Airlines.
According to the National
Research Council
and the U.S. Institute of
Medicine on Thursday,
Americans live shorter
lives than people in other
wealthy nations and suffer
more violent deaths as
well. Of the world’s 17
wealthiest countries,
Americans had the least
chance of living to 50
years.
National Geographic
journalist Paul Salopek announced
on Thursday that
he would be undertaking
possibly the longest walk
ever: a planned 21,000mile
trek starting in Africa
and tracing man’s migration
route to Chile. Salopek
said he would
tromple through the Middle
East, across Asia, a hop
to Alaska, down the western
U.S., and then on to
Mexico, Central, and
South America, a walkabout
that would take
