Mission Statement<br />

The <strong>Fairfax</strong> County Public <strong>Library</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>, Inc.,<br />

doing business as the <strong>Fairfax</strong> <strong>Library</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong>,<br />

is a private, nonprofit corporation committed to<br />

providing supplementary support to the <strong>Fairfax</strong> County<br />

Public <strong>Library</strong>. The <strong>Foundation</strong>, while reinforcing the<br />

need for continued and increased public support for<br />

the <strong>Library</strong>, serves as a catalyst for attracting private<br />

funding from individuals, businesses, organizations<br />

and foundations to enhance library services for our<br />

Wand caregivers; students who attend public and private schools, and those who learn at home; business<br />

e sincerely thank you for your continued support of one of the top library systems in the nation!<br />

In the midst of the economic crisis and budget cuts, the <strong>Fairfax</strong> County Public <strong>Library</strong> (FCPL) serves<br />

as the community center for a diverse range of individuals including preschool children, parents<br />

owners, employees and entrepreneurs; in addition to adults and senior citizens in pursuit of jobs and lifelong<br />

education.<br />

The <strong>Library</strong> <strong>Foundation</strong> completed the first public art sculpture project in <strong>Fairfax</strong> County and the City of<br />

<strong>Fairfax</strong>. The Book of Tumaini found a home at the Hopkins House McNeil Preschool thanks to sponsors Alvah<br />

T. Beander of Melanin Art Appraisals and James & Juliette McNeil. Art in the Pages book statues serve as an<br />

ongoing exhibition representing the importance of our library’s role in supporting education.<br />

In addition to ongoing support for the annual Summer Reading Program, which enrolled 49,000 children and<br />

young adults; library equipment; and other programs and services featured in this report, your contribution<br />

early childhood literacy outreach volunteer, Bonnie Rupp, funded more than $12,000 for the Ready to Read<br />

program.<br />

To date, donors used our Amazon.com Wish List to add 1,145 books to the collection. The First Loan Program<br />

Thanks to the widely supported library bond referendum, the capital expansion project renovations are<br />

underway for three of <strong>Fairfax</strong> County’s oldest community branches including the Richard Byrd <strong>Library</strong><br />

in Springfield; the Thomas Jefferson <strong>Library</strong> in Falls Church and the Martha Washington <strong>Library</strong> in<br />

Alexandria. The Board of Trustees looks forward to the commencement of improvements to the Dolley<br />

Madison <strong>Library</strong> in McLean as well as the reopening of the others. Until then, services and access continue to be offered<br />

from temporary facilities.<br />

In 2009, the <strong>Fairfax</strong> County Public <strong>Library</strong> served a population of over 1,000,000. Nearly half of those residents are active<br />

library cardholders who collectively made 6,123,486 visits to the 23 library branches and borrowed 13,931,027 materials.<br />

Additionally, 114,990 people attended 4,742 programs.<br />

<strong>Library</strong> customers also made 4,206,393 visits to the library’s Internet site last year. Online access is available to library accounts,<br />

plus meeting room reservations, databases, podcasts, downloadable books and a vast array of useful data.<br />

The <strong>Fairfax</strong> County Public <strong>Library</strong> is considered not only the busiest system in the South, but also one of the top U.S.<br />

library systems, providing a wealth of informational services including:<br />

Ask-A-Librarian: information research assistance provided via phone, live chat, e-mail and text messaging.<br />

Grants & Funding Research Center: access to databases to The <strong>Foundation</strong> Center, recognized as the<br />

nation’s leading authority on organized philanthropy.<br />

Ready to Read: early literacy outreach that encourages young children to read.<br />

Access Services branch which removes barriers to library services for people with disabilities.<br />

Because significantly less than one cent of each tax dollar<br />

supports your library system, gifts to the <strong>Fairfax</strong> <strong>Library</strong><br />

<strong>Foundation</strong> enhance your library experience today and will<br />

ultimately endow a number of ongoing programs.<br />

<strong>Your</strong> library’s excellent service is attributed to the 527<br />

employees including 141 holding a master’s degree in library<br />

science and to the volunteers and Friends Groups of each<br />

library branch. To these dedicated volunteers, who contributed<br />

142,854 hours over the past year, I extend sincere appreciation<br />

for sharing your time and expertise with the staff to better serve<br />

this richly diverse community.<br />
