MERCY...The First Name InMercy High School, the first name in Omaha Catholic education. The 2005-2006 school year marked Mercy’s 50 th anniversary on48 th Street. The journey of Mercy is amazing. From Dublin, Irelandto Omaha, Nebraska, Catherine McAuley’s vision of service to thepoor, sick and uneducated hasdriven the development of manyministries. Empowerment ofyoung women and education forwomen and children haveinspired and guided Mercyschools around the world. MercyHigh School Omaha is today’switness to Catherine’s enduringvision.Chemistry students in 1957Mercy High School Celebrates Fifty YearsIn 1864, seven Sisters of Mercydisembarked upon the railroadriver town that was Omaha. On November 2, 1955, Mercy High School opened her doors to 675young women, 150 from St. John and over 300 from St. Mary.Today, through Mercy’s unique negotiated tuition program, no girlis denied an education. This thriving education community iscentered on the works of Mercy and grounded in faith, knowledgeand service.Over the past 50 years, Mercy High School has physicallytransformed into a modern educational institution. As timeschanged, Mercy improved facilities to meet the needs. Typewriterrooms evolved into computer labs; a full-size gymnasium was built. The former gym/auditorium finally became a performing arts centerwith a state-of-the-art sound and lighting system. The sacred spaceof the chapel was renovated and enlarged and now accommodatesover 400 people. The convent was converted into developmentoffices and additional classrooms; and the cafeteria received afacelift, becoming the student dining hall.Mercy’s 50 th anniversary celebration kicked off at Fiesta 2005, aGolden Anniversary. Fiesta 2005 brought in over $230,000 fornegotiated tuition. The festivities continued with the formation ofthe Golden Guild. In April 2005, the 50-year graduates were honoredand given their Alumnae Association pin. These women were thelast graduates of St. John and St. Mary, before the schools mergedto become Mercy High School. On November 2, 2005, the official anniversary date, the HeritageWall was unveiled.Chemistry students 2005During the next 65 years, Mount St. Mary, St. Catherine’s Academy,St. Berchmans, St. Mary and St. John High Schools were opened asalternatives to Omaha public schools. The Sisters of Mercy assumedresponsibility for Catholic education in the city. This permanent pictorial timeline traces the journey of CatherineMcAuley and the Sisters of Mercy from Ireland to Omaha. This 30-foot pictorial timeline hangs in the hallway connecting the oldMercy with the new Mercy, across from the statue of CatherineMcAuley. Mercy’s future sits in the classrooms, where our youngwomen learn and live the teachings of our foundress.2

Omaha Catholic EducationThe unveiling of the Heritage Wall took place in front of members ofMercy’s first graduating class, the class of 1956, as well as pastprincipals, including Sr. Kateri Vojir, RSM, SM ’39, Sr. Virginia Daly,RSM, SJ ’41 and Sr. Corrine Connelly, RSM ’58. The Sisters of Mercy were the first tobring religiously run girls schools to Omaha. As a member of Mercy’sdevelopment committee and a long-time Mercy supporter, Smithwanted to help make this dream a reality. Her employer, QwestCommunications, was offering a special grant to a non-profitorganization where an employee volunteered. Smith saw this as theperfect opportunity to start creating the wall. She researched Mercy’shistory with the help of Mercy archives from Omaha, Pittsburg,Pennsylvania and Manchester, New Hampshire. Various othergroups aided her research, including the Douglas County HistoricalSociety, the Mercy Secondary Education Association and localphotographers. Renze Display company was chosen to create thewall. The Heritage Wall is a sight to be seen. Each picture and memory isa reflection of the pride of Mercy High School. The 50-year celebration continued with Fiesta 2006. The NiftyFifties was a record-breaking event, raising over $275,000 fornegotiated tuition. Gov. Dave Heineman and First Lady Sally Ganemwere present to show their support. The year and a half celebration of Mercy High School’s 50 thanniversary culminated on June 11 during the All School Reunion.Over 100 people attended the Mass and brunch. The event broughttogether classmates from the ’30’s through the 2000’s.Computer lab 2005.“As a former student and former principal, I have a lot invested inthe school. It is such a gift to the Omaha community.”The Mercy community, including the Alumnae Council andadministration, wanted to illustrate the long history of Mercy inOver the past 50 years, Mercy has gone through many changesincluding physical additions and renovations. These changes weremade possible only through the generous support of the Mercycommunity. This community of Sisters of Mercy, the lay men andwomen, parents, students, alumnae, family and friends, thealumnae, family and friends constant support make Mercy what itis today. The building may have changed, but the spirit of Catherine McAuleylives on in each and every student, and will for the next 50 years, asMercy High School continues to give young women a lifetimeadvantage.3

MERCY...The First Name InPlanned Charitable Gift OpportunitiesMost donors are familiar with making cash donations totheir favorite charities. Many limit their gifts to donations bycash or check from their regular income. However, bymaking an outright gift of appreciated property to a charity, donors may reduce their overall tax bill. It is often morecost-effective to use an asset already owned to make animportant charitable gift.Planned Gift t OpportunitiesA planned gift will ensure that assets are distributed inaccordance with the donor’s wishes and that theeducational mission of Mercy High School will continue forgenerations to come. Some options to consider are asfollows:There are numerous ways to include Mercy High School inplanned charitable giving, either during the donor’s lifetimeor after death. Some of the most common options are asfollows:• Gifting appreciated stock.• Amending an existing life insurance policy to includeMercy High School as an additional beneficiary, orpurchase a new one naming Mercy High School as thebeneficiary.• Amending a 401(k) or IRA to include Mercy HighSchool as a beneficiary;• Asking an attorney to create a bequest to Mercy HighSchool by adding a codicil to an existing will. Abequest can be a specific dollar amount, a fixedpercentage of an estate, or a life income plan whichprovides for a surviving beneficiary after the donor’sdeath.• Establishing a charitable gift annuity which providesthe donor or his/her designee with fixed payments forlife.• Establishing a charitable remainder trust. It is best to discuss all changes with an attorney and/or taxadvisor, since tax laws change and must be considered foreach individual’s personal circumstances. Tax laws aretools to be used and can leave the donor and the charity ina better position than failing to plan. Good stewardship ofone’s charitable giving is a way to more effectively use Godgivenresources for God’s purpose.• Endowed named scholarship or tuition award ($25,000minimum);• Teachers’ salary fund ($25,000 minimum);• Endowed teacher training/advanced degree award($25,000 minimum);• Endowed minority tuition assistance ($50,000minimum);• Endowed technology fund ($100,000 minimum);• Endowed academic department ($500,000 minimum),e.g., Theology, fine arts, business, athletics. For estate planning purposes, our legal name isMercy High School, Inc. of Omaha, Nebraska.Questions about gifting opportunities may be directed to:Ingrid Borghoff, Development Directore-mail: borghoffi@mercyhigh.org1501 S. 48 St., Omaha, NE 68106-2504(402) 553-942416

It is a simple method of making a year-end gift.2. The charitable distributions count toward minimumdistribution requirements.3. The distribution generates neither taxable income nora tax deduction, so even those who do not itemize theirtax returns receive a benefit.4. The gifts may be made in addition to any othercharitable giving a donor has planned.5. Donors may transfer up to $100,000 per year directlyfrom their IRAs.6. The tax-free rollovers can be ANY amount, up to$100,000 in one year.If you are interested in supporting Mercy High School witha charitable gift from your IRA, please consult yourfinancial advisor. If you have questions, or would like tocoordinate a direct transfer, please call Ingrid Borghoff, development director, (402) 553-9424.17

I was fivemonths pregnant and had a bachelor’s degree inMathematics, but no Nebraska teaching certificate. Itwas August and Sister Brendan needed a Math teacher. She took a big risk in hiring me, and it is that MercySpirit of taking a risk that has kept me close to Mercy. Icome from a long history of Catholic education thatstressed social justice. I see that same emphasis in theMercy order.Very simply, I donate to Mercy High because I believe intheir mission. The negotiated tuition plan makes itpossible for many students to benefit from Catholiceducation who otherwise would have to go to publicschool. However, I support Mercybecause it is an institution true to its Christian mission. The Mercy education is founded in the teachings of MotherCatherine McAuley and her calling to serve the poor andeducate young women. Mercy is true to those ideals intheir admissions policies and in the moral and socialeducation they provide. Omaha Mercy is unique in that itoffers unparalleled financial support to those who wouldotherwise be unable to afford a Catholic education.Mercy not only prepares young women who are collegebound, but also those who may not have the academicability to go to college. This mixture of academic ability, along with the fact that Mercy draws from over 50parishes throughout the city, allows students to be exposedto a variety of people who may have different experiencesthan their own. Mercy brings these young women togetherfor the common goal of an excellent education foundedin Catholic values and traditions.”Elizabeth Colaric, J.D.Former Mercy teacherIn memory of Mary LangerJohn & Melanie Smith FechterHelen & Larry SmithIn memory of William ParrHelen & Larry Smith(L to R standing) Patricia Callone-Flynn, ’55, Dr. Michon Rozmajzl,RSM, PhD. MERCY...The First Name InBeing the “First Name in Omaha Catholic Education” is both an honor and a responsibility.During this Anniversary year, fifty years at our Woolworth location, we have had numerousopportunities to savor our past, celebrate the present, and envision our future. From theunveiling of the history wall to right up to the all-school Reunion in June, every celebrationhas been a milestone in the collective memory of this great school.Mercy is honored in the thousands of young women who, down through the years, havegraced the halls and classrooms of schools in various locations throughout the city ofOmaha. Since 1864, the Sisters of Mercy have been dedicated to the education of Omaha’s young women. Responsive to theneeds of the times, Mercy schools for girls have emerged, grown, merged or closed, as dictated by the needs of God’s people herein Omaha. The needs of today, at the dawning of this new millennium, cry for affordable private, Catholic education. Convinced that “nothingis more important than the careful instruction of women,” the Sisters of Mercy support negotiated tuition and liberal artseducation that embrace all young women desirous of premier Catholic education. In these trying times, when we are surrounded by conflict and violence at home and abroad, the responsibility for the deliveranceof faith-based, academically challenging, affordable education has never been stronger.Mercy High School accepts this responsibility with the assistance and support of the Sisters of Mercy and the countless generouspeople listed in these pages. Our success story is your story. We thank you, even as we revel in the old cliché:“We’re not the best because we are the oldest.Rather, we are the oldest because we are the best!”Sincerely in God’s tender Mercy,Sister Johanna Burnell, RSMPresident30
