M 67,2C 100M 100Y 100 K 61,8Dear Gardeners and Farmers,we are very pleased that for the first time in the history of Bingenheimer Saatgut AG, we can send you a copy of our seed cataloguetranslated into English. We were inspired to take this step by the active interest being shown from beyond our borders for open pollinated organic seedsproduced for the commercial market gardener. We are delighted that our common commitment to organic vegetable production and organic plant breeding is continuing togrow and becoming more international! Working together gives us a stronger voice as we try to offer alternative solutions to theproblems of the seed trade. Seed monopolies, variety patenting, the disappearance of open pollinated varieties, hybridisationtechniques and the ongoing negotiations in Europe about breeders rights are all themes we are currently addressing.varieties arebiocultural heritageAS OPEN POLLINATINGTRUE-TO-SEEDA vital step towards ensuring the continuedexistence of independent seed traders isour work with open pollinated varieties thatbreed true while at the same time meetingthe professional requirements of commercialorganic growers. We are also supporting the work of Kultursaat, acharity which both maintains old and well testedvarieties and responds to the demands of the organicvegetable market by breeding new varietiesbased on the criteria of improved flavour and other qualities. These new varieties are registered via Kultursaatand are thereby made freely available to form part of our cultural commons. They become neither the property ofprivate individuals nor plant breeding firms. More than 50 new varieties have now been registered by Kultursaat. They can be recognised in the catalogue with this symbol. Money raised from the so called breeding levy on the sale of Kultursaatvarieties flows back into the association to support its further work. Our aim is to offer a comprehensive range of open pollinated varietes of every vegetable species. We still have a long way togo however especially with those species dominated by hybrids. We are fortunate in having a strong network of support andregular meetings to help us achieve our objectives. All our varieties are of course open pollinated. That is vitally important since only those varieties capable of consistently reproducingthemselves can stand fully within the stream cultivated plant development - over centuries.2014 will undoubtedly present both plant breeders and seed multipliers with many new challenges. To meet them in the rightway, we ask you to please continue sending your feedback on our seeds, our service and with regard to our common ideals. We would like to warmly thank Bernard Jarman without whose help an English catalogue of this quality would not have beenpossible. There are many professional translators but hardly any who are at the same as conversant in the field of organic andbiodynamic gardening.Wishing everyone a wonderful new growing seasonMeeting of the members of the Vegetable Seeds Initiative Group, summer 2013Petra BoieGebhard Rossmanithfor the Bingenheimer Saatgut teamBingenheimer Saatgut AGOrganic SeedsKronstraße 24D 61209 Echzell BingenheimTelephone: +49 (0) 6035 1899-0Fax: +49 (0) 6035 1899-40E-Mail: info@bingenheimersaatgut.dewww.bingenheimersaatgut.de2 bingenheimer saatgut

M 67,2C 100M 100Y 100 K 61,8M 67,2C 100M 100Y 100 K 61,8ExplanationVariety InformationAlong with the variety descriptions in the catalogue youwill find the following additional information: The symbolsof the various associations for example „Demeter“ or„Bioland“, indicate which organisation has certified thearea of land on which the seeds were grown.• The place of multiplication using a farm abbreviation isalso given for each seed variety. This is then explainedon the farm profile pages (pp. 96-101).• If no plant breeder is listed next to a variety, it meansthat it is no longer a protected variety maintained andcared for by members of the Biodynamic and OrganicVegetable Seeds Initiative Group.• If maintenance breeding is being carried out on biodynamicground this is indicated by the abbreviation “b-dEHZ“. If it is taking place on organic land the letters“b-o EHZ“ are used.• Varieties for which Kultursaat is entered as the official maintainer (biodynamic maintenance), are designatedwith the symbol of Kultursaat e.V. in black and white and the words Kultursaat EHZ.• New biodynamic varieties are designated with the symbol of Kultursaat e.V. alongwith the name of the plant breeder. All the seeds have been grown by organic seed producers and as a rule on farms certified by one of the organic organisations. In exceptional circumstances we also accept seeds grown to the basic EU organic standards. All seeds offered areof open pollinated varieties and some of them are the result of biodynamic plant breeding.RecommendationsSince the use to which a particular variety may be put depends on a number of different factors such as growing methodsor customer preferences, no limiting recommendations are given. Varieties which state “good for amateur gardeners”are recommended for the small, home or backyard gardener. The recommendation “for seedling plant production” isdirected towards market gardeners who grow young plants for sale to hobby gardeners.(AS) = Varieties with special derogations in accordance with Commission Directive 2009/145/EC Seed. “For the cultivationof varieties developed for growing under particular conditions, whose seed is regulated according to Article 26 ofCommission Directive 2009/145/EC”Please note: The cultivation guides for the different varieties are mainly based on the experience made in the climateconditions of Germany.bingenheimer saatgut 7

ExplanationTechnically prepared seedNormal seed: The seed is cleaned and tested to meet all legalrequirements as well as our own high quality standards. It is sold according to weight or number of seeds.Calibrated normal seed: The seed is sorted according to size(calibrated). We generally offer three sizes of seed S (small),M (medium) and L (large). The exact size indications aregiven in the price list. It is sold according to weight.Precision seed: The seed is calibrated and has a higher germination capacity than normal seed or calibrated normal seed. The minimum germination rate for precision seed is set according to variety. The indications are found in the varietysection of the catalogue. It is sold per number of seeds.Seed Pellets: The seed is encased in a pellet (clay). This gives each seed thesame size and form – very useful when planting seeds singly. The pellet isnaturally made and completely free of all chemicals and meets the obligationsof EU-VO 834/2007.Seed strips/plates/discs/tape: Seed is laid out at defined distances betweentwo sheets of special paper. The size of the strips, plates, discs or tape is givenalongside each item in the price list.TGW: The Thousand Grain Weight is given for all species and refers to the average weight (in grams) of a thousand seeds.Quality testsGermination: Germination tests are carried out according toISTA (International Seed Testing Association) guidelines. Thegermination capacity indicated on the packet is true at thepoint of sale. The actual results of our germination tests are published onour website: www.bingenheimersaatgut.de/kfinfo.php.Bingenheimer Saatgut AG sets its own minimum germinationstandards for each variety which is above the legally requiredminimum.Germination power/vigour test: This is in effect a stress test. The seedlings have to show strong growing power underchallenging conditions. This test, developed for the different kinds of vegetables, is modelled on the so called“Maiskaltkeimtest in Ziegelgrus“ of the ISTA Standards.Plant health tests: Testing for seed borne diseases is undertaken in-house or in cooperation with the plant protectionagency in Wetzlar and other institutes. Seeds are naturally never completely (sterile) free of fungus spores or other micro-organismsbut if a significant number of pathogens are discovered in a seed lot, a warm water treatment is given.Only then if the treatment is shown to be successful, are the seeds offered for sale. The health of plants growing out onthe field is however not only dependent on seed quality but on other factors too including environmental conditions, growing methods etc.Expectations as regards the external aspects of seed quality are continually increasing. We are able to meet these demandsby regularly monitoring the quality of seeds in the warehouse so as to detect any decline in germination capacityat the earliest opportunity and remove the seeds from sale. Unfavourable weather conditions while the seed crop isdeveloping can lead in an extreme case, to our quality standards not being met and the seeds not being sold. This willbe indicated in the catalogue if the matter is known about before it goes to print.8 bingenheimer saatgut

ExplanationPricingCommon pricing structure: The ‘Biodynamic Vegetable Seed Initiative Group’ and ‘Bingenheimer Saatgut AG’ set themselvesthe goal of making biodynamic and organic seed widely available. The seed is produced on farms working to organicagricultural standards and to high seed quality requirements. The multiplication of seed must therefore be a secureand economically viable long term proposition for the farmers. On the other hand we need to offer our customers seedsat an attractive price. The Seed Initiative Group and Bingenheimer Saatgut AG are therefore in continuous dialogueabout pricing and payment procedures and work on them together.Licenses: Where Bingenheimer Saatgut AG contracts members of the Seed Initiative Group to multiply patented varietiesfrom other suppliers, it must pay a license fee to the breeders of those varieties. The license fee is a contribution towardsthe reimbursing of breeding costs.Variety Development Payment: For those varieties which have been registered in the name of Kultursaat e.V. we makea payment towards variety development. This applies to all varieties including those which are no longer protected. Itis a payment towards the maintenance of a variety (maintenance breeding) and the development of new ones (plantbreeding). These payments are taken into account when calculating the price of our seeds. Through buying the seed theuser also participates in the maintenance and breeding of varieties. It has been agreed with Kultursaat that paymentsmade towards maintenance breeding should be increased and extended in order to enable the association to undertakenew and further plant breeding projects.Seed is ValuableSeed is much more than a means of production. It is the starting point for the creation of our food, and bears within itthe whole stream of cultivated plant development from the past into the future. Maintaining it for the sake of futuregenerations is one of our goals. The special quality of our seeds is achieved by producing, maintaining and developingthem on organic and biodynamic farms affiliated to the ”Biodynamic Vegetable Seed Initiative Group”.Availability of SupplyAvailability: Because of the time needed to prepare and print thecatalogue it may well be that not all the varieties have been testedat the time of going to press. Despite careful planning it may happentherefore that an advertised variety is not available after all.The entire stock is likewise dependent on its being suitable for sale– we hope you understand.OrderingOrder forms are included with the catalogue. One form is for onionsets and garlic. We are happy to take your order without a formtoo by email, fax and of course by telephone.
