This is an exciti ng place to be! Jarvis is two places simultaneously:
a traditio n of learning going back before Confederation and a
mode rn school that prepares students for the next centu ry. This
blend of past and future, tradition and the up-to-date is what generates
the special excitement. I am very glad to be here. Thank you
to everyone for your warm welcome.
Pau line McKenzie
J.CI. Vice-Principa l
What great students at Jarvis! Your achieve ments, as echoed in this
yearbook, are a tribute to your hard work, curiosity, persistence and
abilities. Mutual respect for one another is the single most important
guiding principle that permeates the Jarvis community and it is
this notion that will allow you to apply your academic training in a
rewarding and fulfilling manner in the future.
Big things await you; tackle them with confi dence and a sense of
fun and you will sure ly have a full life. My very best wishes go
with you.
The Duke OfEdinburgh's Award
Young CIJnIJdiIJn~' ChlJl/sngs
There are 22 students at Jarvi s who are currently enrolled in the Duke of Edinburgh's
Award program. At the Bronze level are: Nada Gatalo. Kal e Gorsline and Leesa
Kwon g. At the Silver level are: Erika Allen. Radu BUlan. David Seepersad. Amy
Sedgwick Karen Sionim and Anna Strauss. Taking on Gold are: Nitai Desselle. Maggie
Gilmour. Chris Lawley. Marth a McDonald. Jessica Price. Julie Ralhan. Rishma Somji,
Simon Strau ss. Omar Tan and Pieter Van Dijk .
Each level of the award consists of four sections: physical fitness. skills. community
serv ice. and expedition. The Gold and Sil ver levels also requi re a residential project.
At the hardest level. the physical fitness section requires 50 hours of any physical activity
(sorry. gym class doesn 't count!) over a period of at least 25 weeks. This includes any
team sports or hobbies such as cycling, swimming or even rock climbin g.
For the skills section of the Gold Award. over a period of a year and a half, partici
pants are expected to learn and pracuce a skill. Some exa mples that have been done in the past are learning sign language.
taking up an instrument. keyboarding and singing.
The co mmunity service section requ ires 90 hours of volunteer work in a minimum of a year and a half. Of cou rse
this includes worki ng for chari ties and hospitals. but other activities such as tutoring. wor king on the yearbook or
newspaper and being on Student Cou ncil also count. Essentially. any lime spent working for the co mmunity without pay
can be used for this sectio n.
The most exci ting pan of the program is the expedition. For the Gold Award. there are a minimum of three
practice trips to be comp leted. and then an expedition lasting for at least four days and three nights must be undertake n.
Depending on the mode of transportation (i.e. mountain biking. canoeing. rock climbing etc..) there are different lengths
that have to be travelled.
Obviously, completing the D.E.A. is no easy task. It requires a long-term commitment and perseverance (not to
mention a lot of paperwork'). Once completed. it is one of the most rewarding experiences possible. The beauty of the
Award is that it's cumulative. meaning that the hours you put forth towards co mpleting the Bronze Award go towa rd the
Silver. and finally the Gold.
It is not surprisi ng that with such a challenging progra m. many Jarvisites exce l in it and attain Gold. The key is to
start early. For those of you partici pating in clubs or teams here at Jarvis. you've probably done quite a bit towards your
award already. it's just a mailer of signing up. Information can be obtained through Mrs.Schindler in Room 4 10.
So the next time you see the ad in the Daily Magnet. go. sign up. and challenge yoursel f. You won't regret it!
- Simon Strauss
part time in first yea r. At U of"T,selected
candidates may work on research du ring their
first sum mer where they will receive $10001
career in Chemistry these awards offer an
unparallelled opportunity to further their careers,
48stude nts wrote the Avogadro Exam in Chem
One day in May, 17 eager geographers
embarked on an extremely
long jo urney to Virginia in a very
large bus. Throughout the trip we
witnessed a blossoming romance ( !)
all the while trying to fit in with the
Southerners who made scrumptious
scenery was beautiful with many
The Partie Quebecois finall y held a
referendum on the fate of Canada's
francophoneprovince in October.
' 1995. The resul ts were close. to say
the leas t: 49,6'k of Quebec announced
thai they wanted out of
Ca nada. Alt hough the official
victory was on the No side . it is safe
to say thai the moral victory was
won b) ' the separatists. A delegat ion
of students from the College
Francais aJarv is went to Momrealro
lake part in a Canada wide rally to
show Quebec that they have not bee n
ignored.
On October 30 1995. (he
province of Quebec held a
refere ndum asking its citize ns
whether or not (hey wanted to
become a sovereign country. There were numerous campaigns organized in all pan s of Canada to support the
"Non" side. One of these projects was called "Signatures Referend um". a giant petition organized by
O.$.S.A. (Ontario Secondary Schoo l Student Association). They sent petitions to Ontario High School s to be
signed by interested stude nts. By signing the petiti on students were asking Quebec to remain a part of
Canada.
We, the student coun cil of Coll ege Francais aJarvis. were concerned about the refe rendum . Upon rece iving
this petition we went around the school and co llected as many signatures as we could. Then on October 26,
1995 we went to Mon trea l along with other studen ts from Ontario high schools to hold a press conference to
present the ove r 100.000 signatures collected to the "Non " side.
In Montreal we were a very enthusiastic group. waving our Canadian and Quebec flags everywhere. Quebec
was clearly divided . We did our best to convey
our deep love for the province. October 26 will
be a day we will neve r forger.
The nation al ant hem became very importan t for
us all that day. We sang both to and from Montreal.
II was particularl y special on the way back.
for we did not know if it was the last time we
were singing our national anthem as a united
country. We knew it would be a very close race
on Referendum day. and we were relie ved by the
results. We love Canada and we love Quebec.
In Memoriam tta~
On December 6. 1989. fourteen female engineering students were murdered when a man opened fire in a
Montreal university. The nature of this tragedy is not an isolated incident. Women have been subjected to
violence for a long time. many have also died as a result of this violence.
On December 6. 1995. we commemorated the memory of the fourteen women who died at the hands of violence six
years ago. We also remember the tens of thousands of women who have also been subjected 10 violence.
For many people. violence against women is nOI a reality bur these women are mothers. sisters and wives. Most importantly
they are as human as their male counterparts who cohabi t the world in which we live.
We closed the ceremony with a sense of the past tragedies and the hope of preventing future tragedies. The problem does
not remain between the aggressor and the recipient of the abuse. The problem surpasses these boundaries and becomes
OU R problem. We all have to be part of the solution or else we are pan of the problem. We need to address this issue
together as collective members of this society. or else we fail as a society to exerc ise an attribute we all possess - humanity.
Wearing a white ribbon and remember ing Dec. 6, 1989. for a moment is n step in the right direction but - it is NOT
ENO UGH. We must understand the past to appreciate the present and brighten our future or else history will repeat
itself.
History
on
The Ujaama Club (The Continental and Diasporic African Club) boldly embraced the task of
organising a school-wide event in celebration of February's recognition of Black History Month.
Entitled "Gifted Young. and Black: Our Roots and Culture." the presentation was divided into
two parts: an assembly and a series ofworkshops. The main objective ofthe event was to raise the
level ofawareness surrounding issues in and affecting the Black community among students at
Jarvis. while instilling a sense ofpride and self-esteem primarily among Jarvis's Black population.
The assembly involved members ofthe Ujaama Club• .\fr. Macponald and the Vice Principal
of theCollege Francais it Jarvis. Mr. Boulay. Many other acts. including poetry, singingof an
old "Negro" spiritual, Gumboot dancing. and speeches. were all presented at the assembly. Among
other things. the assembly was honest and riveting. It open ly challenged racism in our society.
Some of the workshops which look place on the following day were Media Images of
Black People. Racism in the Justice System. Racism in Education. Homophobia. and Dub Poetry.
Members of the community such as Ahdri Zhina
Mandiela. Margret Gittens. Amah Harris. Maxine
Greaves. and Anilia Soyinka all showed their support
by volunteering their time. and coming to
Jarvis to conduct the workshops.
While. unfortunately, only a small number
of the Jarvis population could participate. due to
limited space and time for the workshops. most of
the workshops were full. The students who did
get the chance to take pan came away feeling
educated. overwhelmed. and empowe red to be a
pan of the fight agaist discrim ination.
A shock in t h e system.•.Very few students knew that Spring Fest 1995 was going to be their last. Perhaps ifthey
had. more students might have attended this day-long celebration. Those who did come enjoyed several fun activities
such as the Food Guys barteque. Student Council's Video Dance Party. Spelling Bee. Geopard and the many entrepreneurial
students' booths. Unfortunately, the business department has decided to end the Doublevo ur Dollars assignment
(thai brings us such wonders as baked potatoes and t-shirts for great prices!) and so a key component of the
festival has died. Along with an extended March Break. most teachers feci that they can't afford to lose any more class
lime and are concerned that students . re taking advantage of Spring Fest to skip off. From the students perspective.
many were surprised to hear the news. When asked her opinion, Niksala Krishnan replied. "I'think it's okay that they
aren't going to have it. 1know a lot of students take advantage of it " Mrs. Schindler, the head of the Enrichment
programs, hopes that in the future a new kind of act! ity day will take form.
"I wish it could be otherwise, but there'll be other years, and maybe students
will come back to it with renewed energy and vigour a few years down the
road." Let's hope so.
GENDER RETREAT GROUP
This very committed group of Jarvis stude nts, some of whom attended
the Gender Retreat orga nized by the schoo l board two years ago, have
been active in the school for the last two years . This year the students
felt there was a need for anti-homophobia educa ion especially in Grade
9 classes. With the help of the staff sponsors and Vanessa Russel from
the Equity Studies Office at the school board and the cooperation of the
Engl ish and ESL Departments at Jarvis the students organized and participated
in a series of workshops, given in Grade 9 English and ESL
classes. The Jarvis students teamed ug v.ith facilitators from TEAC H,
meaning Teens Educating And Confronting Homophobia. The workshops
were extremely successful.
One word sum s up the 1995 track season. SUCCESS. A total commitment to training.
hard work and effort by every athlete led to the team's remarkable success. Two returning
seniors. Adrian Jordon and Lee Sutherland stepped up and provided the leadership.
work ethic and dedication which woul d mark this team. A diminutive Ross Bain
provi ded the gutsy inspiration for everyone at practice day in and day out.
TSSAA SENIOR CHAMPIONS HIP
A small contingent of seniors won the senior TSSAA
track championship with an amazing 172 points (highest
total ever for Jarvis). A commitment to multi ple
events and outstanding individual performances were
the foundation for the team 's victory. Ned Stojic was
the senior overall champion with 30 points. Ned had
an out standing meet with 2nd in the 800m. 2nd in the
ISOOm. 2nd in the 3000m. and 4th 400m hurdles.
'TEAM CHAMP IONS HIP TR OPHY'.
For the first time in twenty-five years the overall boys
learn trophy was wrest led from Central Tech. The
Jarvis track team took the overall championship with a
309 point total.
OFSSA
The remarkable success of the 4x400 relay team (Jordan.
Anashara. Lee, Van Dijk : 3:23.8) was marred by a
disappointing 9th place finish at OFSSA. An outstanding
run by Adrian Jordan took him to second place (48:49) in the Senior 400 metre s.
Lee Sutherland placed fifth in Senior highjump (1.90) and Alex Gardner was sixth in
Junior javelin (48.44). Coached Munn and Pyatt were extremely proud of the effo rt
put forth by this team.

Pep-Rally
Simon the Magnificent endures multiple tests of his greatness.
This year's installmen I of the J.c.1. January rally contained a bit of ... well PEP. From the
amazing G.A.C. " vtacarena'' to the zesty J.c.1. Bulldog. from the awe-struck spectators 10
the invincible President. it was a pep-rally for the ages. The B.A.A. did an extremely stylish
job on this one.
Although we had to suffer through an elaborate tease courtesy of the Boys Swim Team and
despite the fact that our Senior Bulldogs lost at the end of the afternoon. they performed
with the grace and style of pure winners. Everyone who came out 10 chear their team had an
On My Stay At Jarvis
When I arrived at Jarvis in January of 1993, like most newcomers to
the school. I only knew the school by its reputation; solid academics.
experienced staff renowned athletics and students from almost every place
on this earth. Pretty intimidating! Even though my teaching experiences at
North Toronto Cj., West Toronto 5.5.. Eastern High School of Commerce
and The City Aduh Learning Centre gave me many different educational
venues, J entered the school as you most probably did , full of anticipation
and some anxiety about "JARVIS" ,
"Hi. Keith and welcome 10 Jarv is" was the booming voice of
Principal David Wells, a gentle, caring, invit ing (and somewhat robust) man
who immediately made me feel at home. Many introductions, my new
office, my wonderful secretaries, I had arrived. I walked the halls and
within an hour I knew what Jarvis was all about. It really does not take long
to see why this is such a great place.
Jarvis is a school with a sense of community. Staff and students here
care about each othe r both personally and educationally. Students are selfdirected
and enthusiastic. Staff are truly interested in the students' wellbeing
and willingly adapt to the demands of student needs. There is a smile
on everyone's face (well almost everyonel). What a wonderful last school
placement before retirement.
I wish to thank all of you for making my short stay at Jarvis
fulfil ling and, I hope, as meaningful to you as it has been for me:
May your joys be as deep as the ocean.
May your cares be as light as the breeze.
l\lr. Emery
(
It was in my final year of highschool that I had Mr. Walter Howard
as a math teacher. That year of being in Mr. Howard's legendary Triple
Math course, with some of the brightest and friendliest students at Jarvis,
will remai n a highlight of my highschool experiences,
In the beginning we onl y knew. from talk that filtered down from
older stud ents, that we were expected to work hard in this class. We wanted
to benefit from Mr. Howard's expertise and experience in this rigorous
"math package" that included Fin ite, Calculus and Algebra & Geometry. We
met everyday, sometimes for as long as two and a half hours, to liste n and
practice the language of math. But there was more than math that took place
in that room, We laughed, we worried, we studied and we inevitably
succeeded under Mr. Howard's wise intelligent eyes.
It became clear early on that Mr. Howard talked a tough line - will I
ever forget the phrase, "Back to work peasants!"? - but approaching him
outside of class usually resulted in his empathy and advice. Mr. Howard
demanded our concentration and ingenuity in class but he was. in my Jarvis
experience, one of the most tolerant of teachers, who was willing to
acknowledge the demands of extracurricular involvement. Mr. Howard was
unwilling to compromise his standards of achievement, but provided
genuine support to all our activities and tried to help us balance all our
demands.
As Mr. Howard retires from his position as Head of the Jarvis Math
Department. he leaves behind his mark of excellence and enduring memory
of his personality on the students that he has taught. As a mathematician!
educator/administrator/mentor for the past 30 years, Mr. Howard has
dedicated his life to exposing students to more than perhaps "required". Mr.
Howard will be remembered in the minds of those he taught.
Every year the Magnet Staff aims to surpass the
previou s year's issue . Wh ethe r or not we have succeeded is
not for me to decide. However everything we did. we did
with energy and enthusiasm (well. for the most pan...). As a
result. thi s is by far th e bes t yearbook evert Not that I'm
biased...
Best of luck to next year's staff. And I trul y hope
that 25 years from now, yo u will open up this book, flip
throu gh it for the mill io nth time and still be amazed at how
incredible the past year has been. I know I will ...
,-- --, I honestly hope that there are as many pictures of you and your frie nds in
this yearbook as possi ble, The Magnet was put together ard uously and
effectively by the grea test staff in the Northern Hemisphere. and I know that
their work has not gone unappreciated. After all you are holdin g the magnificent
genuine article in your hands. To Dawn and Marion, sure we were
a bit late with the staff sect ion but just try and say that it isn't the best staff
sect ion you have seen or will eve r see in your lifetime. Jessica and Judy.
you guys both rock the mic and the sports sec tion is nothing sha n o f a work
of art . simply perfect. Good cropping Jud y!!
Two weeks from now. or two decades from now when these pages
are once aga in turned. I hope that a wave of memories of Semi's. CANAP.
the caf and Mac's Milk all come washin g back to you. making you feel
young and spry o nce more, The se were the people of JCI 95 - % and they
were all individuals who were exc iting. witty. channing. smart-dressers.
and although not always know ing the school song or possi bly attending
class. they were all great peop le. who will remain forever in infamy in the
Magnet
